Nav hack or aftermarket LCD for Movies?

Ordering an '05 and not sure of the best LCD setup. Pretty much know my way around and want an LCD for watching movies.

Requirements -
Plays while car is driving (all you safety freaks get in your minivan and buckle up).

Car can be returned to stock condition (I have to turn my car in every year (sob sob)).

Hardwires into Bose Audio system (My XM w/ RF modulation in my X-Type Sport has barely passable quality where I live).

Has to look clean (retractable screen definitely a plus and the more stock it looks the better)

Options -
Would be a plus to have DVD player in dash instead of trunk (obviously a vote for aftermarket screen).

Feedback appreciated. I want to get my RX-8 order in!

mmmmmmmmmmm, well I installed the avelectronics box I ordered from thew at rx8garage.net it works great but you will have to cut wires for the NAV, as for dvd players you can have ones in the glove compartment

I taps the nav screen, let me give you an idea (I'll be posting a DIY on it very very soon)

as for audio, pie aux in, can be bought at rx8garage.net too, he has a whole package

if you have to turn your car in, in a year you will have no trouble turning it back to its original look, all the wire cuts are hidden and can be soldered back together and taped up, no one will know

oh and the video looks MUCH better in person

I don't think it makes me a safety freak to think you're a moron for watching DVD's while you drive.

my gf watching the screen while I drive, I find I don't look at all, it is easy when you own an 8 and love to drive it so much

really video on the NAV is just the best way to distract passengers from throwing up from the way I drive

g8rboy - fair enough.

truemagellen - seems like it would make it worse. LOL. I saw the avelectronics and the pie. How many hours for a skilled DIYer?

I'm not skilled in car DIYing, but I've got an active brain to figure it out, so for a skilled DIYer 5 hours, and that is a really clean job, I took a little longer (I kept 'testing' it to make sure it was working

if you took apart the car 99 percent of people wouldn't know you had it in there except the box in the trunk

the pie unit just plugs in, seriously easy as pie

I'll be posting a DIY on the avelectronics install, I got the unit from thew at rx8garage.net he even has a package, did I already write that? I'm just happy with the unit so I'm happy to recognize thew

Damn, It makes me so MAD that they didn't bring ANY RX8 to Puerto Rico with the nav screen. ( there a re no CD's for PR) and now I have to spend $2000 to be able to special order my screen from Miami if I want the "original" shure I know that there are a million aftermarcket screen out there but I still havent seen one that looks as clean as having the original.

If any of you guys know where I can get the nav screen for less than $2000 it will be very apreciated.

I made up my mind. Truck load of Mazda's just showed and it had some 8's on it. After a few minutes of peering in the window with a buddy we figured out the door was unlocked (who would have thought). After a few more minutes of pushing dead buttons we figured out the keys were in it...(that was really unexpected). Unfortunately I value my job too much so I just backed out, put it in first and dropped the hammer back into the spot and then started playing with live buttons buttons.

Found one with and without the nav unit and the without is out of the question for me because I'll only have it for a year. The nav unit display is perfectly mounted, good sized, and is widescreen format. So, I'll just have to start planning for the mod to the nav system to play movies.

What was unexpected though was how right everybody is about how lame the Bose system is. My kid's Taurus with stock Mach Audio completely kicks its @$$ and the stock Alpine in my Jag really wastes it (yeah I suspect I'm an old fart relative to most of you). Muddy lows and bla highs. It's pretty loud but who cares if it sounds like crap.

Now I need to start looking for a non-intrusive stereo replacement but at least I know what to order. There's gonna be some nice stuff on e-bay in 12-18 months...

Oh - If anybody is wondering about the all weather mats - They're construction site grade. Probably five pounds of rubber each and capacity for about a quart of slop/slush/mud/whatever.

Why in the world would you want to be able to watch a movie while driving? If you get involved in an accident and it is known that you were watching a movie while driving, well you will be in a lot more trouble than you think.

I think they was a recent case where the driver was found guilty of vehicular homicide because he was watching a movie while driving.

It begs the question ,,,why? There is enough morons out there that can't seem to talk and drive at the same time. Watching a movie????
