NAV Owners -- Time to Start Calling!
OK NAV owners... I think the time to sit around and wait is over. As of today, Mazda says Navteq "is not releasing that data". The rep said this came "directly from the VP of Mazda North America"... that is a pretty bold statement to make if they are lying. Navteq is of course blaming Mazda. They have been putting us off for over a year! If you can spare 10 minutes a day, please call. Anyways, here are all the numbers you need to start calling:
Navteq: 1-888-628-6277
Mazda NA: 1-800-222-5500, select option 4
Can someone make this a sticky thread?

i agree, this whole thing is rediculous. they are supposed to release a new update disk every year, its deff time for them tp put out a new one. ibe called them a number of times and they keep giving me dates but they never come out on that date. if i would have known this i wouldn't have bought the factory unit, i would have just purchased an aftermarket one. they maps are really outdated.

Truemagellan,
I would pay $150-200
Some people on the West Coast sub-forum claim the map update for the Lincoln Navigator works..but I have yet to verify this...

I am the one without any disk. Mazda is looking for one, the one that was suppose to be with the car is missing. Anyway they have not been able to find me any disk yet, new or old. For the hell of it I called Navteq and was told the new Mazda disk will be released at the end of this month, for what it is worth. So far I paid for a worthless $2000 option.

OK..Update (take it all with a grain of salt):
Spoke to Navteq again: I was told the discs for the 8 ARE already made, but they have not been given permission by Mazda to sell them. Starting with 2005 releases, end-users will buy updates from Navteq and NOT their local dealer. The Navteq rep also said the Lincoln Navigator DVD sysem is made by Denso whereas the 8 is Panasonic. I asked if any other company uses Panasonic and she said to her knowledge, no. She also said the 2005 Lincoln update is only available through them (which the dealer I spoke to confirmed) and that it was $165, not $40, so I am wondering what lincoln disc is being referred to in this thread is? I say call Mazda and bitch bitch bitch

Another Update:
Spoke to a Mazda Rep: He says that despite our conclusion that Mazda doesnt care, they do. He says this issue has been going on forever and thats its probably the number 1 complaint they get. He says it was wrong for the Mazda rep I spoke to earlier to blame Navteq because there are 3 parties involved (Mazda, Panasonic, Navteq)and blame should not be pointed at any one party. He said it would be inappropriate for thim to give us a ballpark figure of what they will cost, cause he said right now, no one knows for sure and it would just make the situation worse. He said all he can give us is a June/July estimated date, but he undestands that we dont have to believe him, because frankly, as a consumer, he wouldnt believe them either. He said we really dont need to complain because they have enough complaints compiled from the last year+, that they are working to figure this out. I just hate knowing that the discs are in fact already made and just collecting dust somewhere.....
I still say we call....

I love the integrated screen...the NAV I almost never use...use the screen for XBOX/movies/backup cam...it is great
I would use the nav much more if I bought the Remote Control for it which is way too expensive...that way I could remove the controls from the center console which I keep bumping as I shift also passengers could control the nav with ease :D

AAAAAHHHHH!!! I can't believe I am about to pay $30,000++ for a "loaded" RX-8 and I can't even get a freakin' updated Navi Disk!!
I don't even have my car yet but this is VERY upsetting and I will join you efforts to call and contiue to complain.
I'm not sure if it'll help but at least they'll know that this issue is not going to go away until they make these disks available.

We can raise a big stink all we want. The rep at Mazda said, they hear us loud and clear and are working on it...two people who work with him are saying June/July. Honestly, I think they are sick of us calling and are working just to shut us up...so we need to keep calling. Like I said...the discs ARE made...which really sucks to know...they are waiting for us...

Here's a recent transcript of my emailed inquiries and responses to/from Navteq:
Me:
I own a 2004 Mazda RX-8 that has your Nav system installed. The
maps are from 2002, and are outdated. What is the actual release date for
the new maps for this vehicle?
Navteq:
Kevin,
Thank you for contacting Navteq. The current version for the 2004 Mazda
RX-8 is version 2004.1. The next release is anticipated to come out in
April. Please check with your local Mazda dealer for ordering information.
Me:
The dealership told me I was to deal with Navteq directly to get map updates
and also to get updated firmware for my nav unit. They also said that I
could request the DVD for upgrading the firmware to the version currently
being provided with the current production cars, that I would need to place
a deposit with Navteq, at which time they would send me an upgrade DVD, and
the deposit would be refunded when I returned the DVD after upgrading the
firmware. I don't understand why the firmware upgrades are not being
handled by the dealership. Is this information correct as you understand
it? If so, how do I go about getting the firmware upgrade DVD? Also, when
I go online to your web site and enter 2004 Mazda RX-8, it says no map
updates are available. This seems to be in conflict with the fact that the
maps in my 2004 RX-8 are dated 2002. If a 2004.1 map version is available,
why doesn't it say so? I would suggest a 'current map version' field be
displayed so that customers will know what Navteq considers to be the
current map version. We have no way of checking through your ordering
system if we have the latest release.
Navteq:...Navteq:...Navteq:
The silence is deafening, isn't it? I'm beginning to think I purchased a $2,000 boat anchor. I sent that last email a month ago, and have gotten no response. So here are my current problems:
1) Mazda says you must get updates through Navteq. Navteq says you must get updates through Mazda.
2) I have been checking for new map releases since I bought my RX-8 in July '03. The Navteq website has never indicated that a new release was available, yet they are claiming the current release is 2004.1, and a new release is coming out in April. What gives???? Is there anyone who owns an RX-8 with a newer map than 2002?
3) I am beginning to suspect that Navteq will not support the DVD player in our cars. The minute we find out this is true, count me in on the class action lawsuit!
