Nav screen interface (technical)

I'm not sure if this is the right place but...

I was wondering if anyone has connected to the nav screen directly. Looking at the AV Electronics video hookup, you tap into the R G B and sync lines to the screen. This leads me to believe that an in car computer or something similar should be able to do the same, but without another box performing the intercept.

As a related, has anyone figured out the signaling for the nav controls in the center console. Replacing/augmenting the nav computer and using the stock controls is just a thought currently in my head..

I've been thinking about doing the same thing and would prefer a direct connection from the PC to RGBS lines. Keep us posted if you happen to find any info on how to hook this up properly.

fray I can give you several threads on the matter

the problem is NAV uses RGBs and the sync is seperate but not seperate H and V....so the problem is most graphic cards not only cannot display RGBs inherently but when you use powerstrip to adjust timing and freq to get a proper sync signal the card will fail to produce an image

the forum member antichristpm was succesful in producing an image but could not go above 8 bit color for viewable resolution and could only get 16 bit for an very low resolution signal

antichristpm also dissasembled the stock lcd screen and installed a touchscreen filament....this was successful except to fit the unit he had to cut down the pcb around the lcd...which is nerve racking

if you want more info this issue was discussed to death a year ago...well july 2004 to be exact...I'll pull up the threads if you like.

I still believe that the best way to handle this entire project is to remove the stock lcd...take an aftermarket lcd (frame free or cut away the frame) and then modify the aftermarket 7inch screen to fit in the stock location

then abandon the stock NAV unit altogether or convert the RGBs to applicable RGBsHV which is much easier to do then the other way around

good luck!

like trumagellen said, trash the stock screen and replace it with a 7 inch Xenarc.

The aftermarket 7" screens a little bigger so you might have to do some trimming.

I'd get a rgb to vga adapter and use the screen for your stock nav and for a computer.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket touchscreen LCD similar to the Xenarc that would fit into the stock nav screen housing?

They will all be a hair too big. Thats not to say you won't be able to fit it in there. I campared my Xenarc to the stock nav screen and my screen LOOKED about a 1/4 inch wider. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

Well, if you mean the opening on the front being 1/4 inch too small, then that can be trimmed I guess.
I suppose the Xenarc would have to be taken apart (i.e. no frame) to fit in there, correct?
Dunno if I'd be willing to hack apart a relatively expensive LCD unit to do that - would be better if there was a frameless LCD that could be used.

Yes, you would have to remove the LCD from the case. Xenarc knows that this must be done on some installs. It states on their web site that the unit can be taken apart within the first month for installation and not void the warrenty. Yes, you would have to trim the bezel of the stock nav housing, no big deal.

Not meaning to threadjack, but has anyone actually attempted this ? I mean, display the STOCK NAV on a regular VGA screen using the above adapter or any other ? (I know about the AVElectronics adapter but that one is meant to do the opposite of what I want, I mean, put a different video source into the stock LCD).. I have the stock nav, and I'm getting ready to put my carpc (from my old car) in the 8, but still trying to decide whether or not to use the stock screen (definitely would like to keep the stock nav -- if I can).

that doesn't work as the RGB spec Rotary Rasp refers to is the standard one with two seperate syncs or Sync on green

sync for our Nav is on one RGB s...where the sync is a seperate composite

although the technical data is confusing as it states composite hmmmmmmmmm

K238-1J: up to 1280x1024; Sync: HSYNC= HSYNC+ VSYNC (Composite) - VSYNC= VSYNC, SYNC-Stripper

heck give it a try

yeah, just wondering if anybody had ever done that (Stock Nav into a different screen), figured that it was worth to ask, but since I already had another screen w/ touchscreen, I'll probably just end up replacing the whole thing -- the Navigation software on the computer is way better by the way..
