Actually, someone has already hooked up a dvd player to the stock nav system. Check out the pics in these pages:

That's awesome.....Anyone know the difficulty level/cost associated with the install? Forgive my ignorance, but does mazda have a DVD player to integrate with the dash?...or do I have to go aftermarket for the actual player, and then integrate with the stock screen? Any further insight....?

Mazda doesn't have a dvd player, so you have to get an aftermaket player. The last pic above shows the unit that connects the player to the screen.
I was thinking that I would just use my laptop to play dvd's during long trips.

Go to the website www.avelectronic.com, and note that they claim that you only have to cut 4 wires. It appears that the sound is routed via an FM modulator.
You will have to go with an additional aftermarket DVD player for this setup, you cannot use the navigation drive to play standard video or audio DVDs.

Actually, you can also get a "Navi Tray" and add your own LCD screen. This is apparently a JDM market option that just came out. Check out this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=13373

I'd actually want to see pics of a seperate person that has installed this as I've seen some pics of people that use that companies product and when playing DVD's it has lines going throught the picture.

Yeah, but that setup looks ugly, hacky, and "come steal me" compared to the slick motorized setup that you get with the stock NAV unit.

I have seen some sweet custom stereo installs. If you find the right person they could easily take an aftermarket screen motorize it into the dash like the OEM and install some controls on the center console. It can all be done. Will it cost some bucks? Probably. Will the unit be something you picked out and therefore have all the features you want? Definately.
I say, if you don't want to spend the bucks on a custom integrated install, go hit a deer and total your car. File a comp claim with your insurance company, buy a new RX-8 w/ NAV installed with your insurance money.
