BTW, I called the NAV system designers to find out about an updated DVD mapping system (I have areas in my town that are "black" on my screen because they were built within the last two years.) They say a new DVD will be available in December for "only" $200.00... You would think the first upgrade woul;d be free.

I am interested in this but not for playing DVDs. I've been thinking about adding a race camera setup to the car and it would be nice to use the Nav screen as a monitor so you check the camera(s) position and review the video clips.

wonder.. it says the sound passes via radio frecuency? i would hate to be in a place with really bad reception ..
when using an fm modulator reception isnt an issue.. it is transmitting from within your car so it will pick it up. i have had an fm modulator used for my mp3 player before and there were areas here where i couldnt get anything but AM radio stations and i never had a problem with my fm modulator

yep, i'm seriously considering this as well! would be awesome, if for no other reason, just to say you can do it!

has anybody else used AVElectronics for this or any other gadgets? if so, have you gotten similar results?

for those newer folks wondering about this same stuff (i know i was), hopefully this reply will bring the thread back to the top of the list for a couple days! read it! it's very helpful!

I have the AvElectronic unit and it works like a charm. I mounted it behind the back seat. Can't see a thing. I was kinda nervous yanking the seats out and taking the carpet up to run all the wires. I mounted a AudioVox single DVD rom under the passenger seat where I can reach it from the driver seat. You cannot see anything when looking in the car. But it works great. the only problem is using the TV tuner while driving, it pretty much sucks. I might just buy those Kenwood power antennas, that might work better. But I don't wanna watch the TV anyways.Mostly videos. The FM modular works way better than I expected. Never have had a single problem with it.

All I bought from them was the TV tuner box. It comes with everthing you need. AVElectronic sends you this little schematic to tell you what wires to cut. My friend installed it. I was kinda nervous about doing it. But after seeing and helping him do it , it wasn't very difficult. It took about 3-4 hours but we didn't work on it constantly. He does this kind of stuff for a living so it went pretty fast. I didn't take any pictures but I mounted mine behind he passenger back seat just like someone else in this forum and he had pictures. I wired up the infared eyes for the DVD rom and Tuner underneath the radio volume ****. I popped out that little plate. But now I have to have a plastic shop make me a smoked plexiglass cover so the eyes can see through it.

Hey people, what's up. I've been lurking around this site for the last few months, reading up on cool things like this to do when I get the 8 (two weeks?). Anyway, I have searched around and can't find out how the resolution is on the factory Nav screen. I'm thinking about hooking up the Avelectronics system and running a PS2 through it, but heard the res on the factory screen isn't that good.

I know LCD screens are about 800x600, and I'd like to know the difference between the two, as I'm deciding whether to get the Nav + hook up through it or build something totally custom. As I have said, I've done a search for this, so if it's been discussed before, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks-

Dave

The AVelectronic guys are sending out my TV Nav Tuner with a 24 pin connector that "should" make it a "Plug and Play" system. They offerec me a discount if I showed pics of my install on the board, and I will get them posted as soon as its installed!

ohh sweet. that means i wont have to cut any wires..

BTW i have a question has anyone decided to install a real DVD player in the current location of the stock map unit.. It seems to me that it would be a smart idea to move the stock unit into the hidden storage compartment between the rear seats. Then put the new unit in the old spot. I jut wounder if the old stock Map dvd player will mind not sitting flat? This way you can burry the old map unit where its hard to reach and put the new unit within arms reach.. What do you think?

Why do you want to install the avelectronics boxs behind the back seat? is there not a easyer location like in the trunk? behind the glove box? etc... just woundering cause i am getting ready to install mine today.. I am not sure where the wireing harness is that i have to cut into.. IE behind the dvd player in the back.. ? is this why your putting the unit back there ?

the back seat is so easy to take out its not that big of a deal. I was nervous at first but there really is nothing to it. the bottom just pops up and the part your back wrests on has two bolts on the bottom and than you lift up.

i know its easy to take out but the box is to thick to be mounted behind without pushing out the seat back after reinstallation of the seat.

i put mine behind that medal bracket but it pushes that plastic piece out in the trunck. I plan on mounting it right on that bracket though. someone else did it that way and it didn't look like his seat pushed out. maybe he did cut out the foam.
