Navi Question

Whenever I input a destination and get going the navi directs me to where I wan't to go with flawless directions. However, after I arrive and am ready to head back home, the voice continues to redirect me to my original location. And i have no idea how to quickly stop the routing (because closing the screen doesnt seem to work) Also sometimes ill put a destination, and would only need directions for about half of the trip, and when I start being familiar with the streets, i have no idea how the shut the lady up!!! SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks a lot, i know this might seem like a stupid question but it is extremely frustrating and any help would be appreciated, aside from this, the car is perfect!!

I can realy identify with the problem! When I picked up the car I sat in it and played with the nav while they were doing the paperwork. I put in some phony destination and couldn't shut the bitch up on my trip home.

If you press the enter key, you'll get an abreviated menu that lets you turn off the navigation. You will also see it on the main menu. I couldn't get her to shut up by just pushing the voice button.

It's a great system, and I'm sure you'll love it. There's a lot of stuff you can do after you read up and play around with it.

Here's what I have done. while in the NAV mode (i.e. the lady is talking) press the enter button. At the bottom of the list should be Guidenence OFF. Click that and she should stop bothering you. I hope it helps.

Looks like I was the second person to hit submit. You can also silence her by setting the volume to zero.

Speaking of restaurants, I can't seem to find the option that gives me names of restaurants in my area. If I were searching for a particular restaurant (or any other business) would I need to know the address or can I simply input the name of the establishment?

First a question, do you have the unit setup to be your region? When I got my car the dealer had been messing around and the region was set to the northwest instead of the southeast. So check and make sure you are set to your home region in the setup menu. This should only need to be set one time although I don't know if things reset after the battery i disconnected.

Then select destination and choose points of interest. From their scroll down to resturants and press enter. It will give you a choice of city, name or street address I believe. Pick your favorite and start entering.

One final note, how new is the resturant. Best I can tell from my area it needs to have been around for a year or more. Some areas may be more uptodate. I certainly haven't been through every item to see how current it is. I hope the updates aren't two expensive.

Is $199 for the new updated DVD each year considered expensive?

By the way, to save a few clicks, if you're at the top of the menu, scroll up and your cursor will reappear at the bottom which, conveniently, is the Guidance Off menu item. Just a quicker way to get there.

As to why you reach your destination and she keeps talking, that's weird. Once I arrive at mine, it says something like "You have arrived at your destination", the drawn route vanishes, and she shuts up. All I have to do is close the screen. Maybe your programmed destination and physically where you parked aren't "close enough" for her to realize you arrived. I'd guess if you don't pull to within a couple hundred yards, she assumes you're not there yet and when you restart the car she keeps trying to "help" you finish your route. Try with a different address (your home, maybe?) and when you pull into the driveway won't that conclude your routing instructions?

Another time-saving tip: When choosing a restaurant (or any POI) make sure you enter the city first. If you don't, it will display a list of the POIs in your entire multi-state region which can be huge. I tried "Filippi's" under Italian and got like 50 restaurants, some were hundreds of miles away. If I enter "San Diego" first (easy, cause it remembers it in my list of cities so I don't have to type it out), then start typing Filippis', after about 3 letters I have a very short list. I now always enter city name first, and find the POI function much more useful and easier to use.

By the way, I called Navtech to confirm we have the latest database (I think it's called 2003.1.) On your setup menu you can view what software and database version you have.

Interestingly, Navtech says they don't sell DVDs for Panasonic to the public, and their online store seems to confirm this. They have database products for many cars, but not for Mazda nor Panasonic. They call this software OEM, which means you have to buy it from Mazda when it's available. I plan on updating mine about every two years vice every year; it oughta be "good enough." Combined with my savings on gas and oil (if you've followed these discussions on other threads) I've reduced my annual operating costs by over $600. Sooner or later it adds up to real money.

Sorry guys..........believe it or not, I'm really quite technology literate but this Nav isn't terribly intuitive.

It was mentioned above about one's cities programmed in. Can you tell it beforehand which cities you will be searching? In Texas, would I put Austin in somewhere. Then, when it asks for the restaurant, and I start typing A-U it will pull up Austin? I assume then, once the city is input, it will pull up restaurants in the Austin area only. I didn't realize that you can choose restaurants by type of cuisine.................true?

Thanks
