Need advice...

I need your guys help. I’ve decide to ditch my single 12” subwoofer and go with two 10’s. I’m trying not to go north of $300 for the pair (Ebay prices). I have narrowed it down to Kicker CVX102, Rockford Fosgate T110D4, and JL Audio 10W3. Anyone have any experience with these subs and or any recommendations would be welcomed.

Please feel free to make suggestion with amps too. Thanks

I personally don't like Rockford Fosgate subs at all. They don't take much abuse. Kicker subs are great for the money, but in my opinion you just can't beat JL.

Just get the one with lots of support in case anything happens. Maybe you should just throw a Marshall Bass Amp into the car.

So did you know that a good 8" will give a lower note than a 10" ? (Dont ask why, someone explained it to me once, I dont understand it . . but listen to different systems and you will notice it too) So I would recommend something like a orion 225 bridged down to 1/4 ohm. this will give you 400x1 or go with 1 ohm for 100x2. As for good sound, that has more to do with your cross over than the amp. Subs dont really get too much noticable distortion. And like some one else already said - get the JL audio speakers.

I haven't installed subs in my rx-8.... but I had 2 10" kickers in my 3000GT with a 1000watt amp and it was damn nice. Good price too.

Umm, not quite accurate so lets start again. After 20 years of audio there is always something to learn, I continue to learn everyday. A speaker plays what it is given. Give any subwoofer a restricted range of frequencies and it will play them to the best of it's abilities. What makes the major difference other than build of the speaker for the application, is the box. The box will make or break the output of the chosen driver. Thus, your statement while inaccurate can also be proven to be true at the expense of the larger driver being in the wrong box whilst the smaller driver may be in the right box. All things being equal though, a 10" driver in the proper box vs. a 8" driver in the proper box, both subs being equal, the 10" will play the same deep bass note as the 8", what will be different is the amplitude. The 10" will be able to move more air at a lower frequency, hense, more bass.

Know the goals of what you are after. A single 12" sub in the proper box with the right amp can obliterate a couple of middle of the road 10's in the right box. It is all about how the system is matched together and who the person is that is doing the matching.

So, you would recommend a single 12" over two 10", can you point me in the right direction? Which brand of woofer and amp to match. Anyone who has twenty years of experience has my full attention! Thanks

Post the goals of what you want the system to do. Sound good, go loud, be stealth, take up the entire trunk, take up a little bit of the trunk, deep bass and lots of it or more snap. With so many options to choose from the very first thing to do is to have a game plan. Then equipment can be chosen for the task at hand instead of hope for the best with brand X,Y and Z. When most people who have years of experience choose items, it is based on real world applications, meaning equipment that we know has a highly predictable outcome for your application.

I have the Bose system. Well let me start with what I have done, so far, I’ve upgraded the tweeters in the sail pail and added 1 12” Visonik enclosed subwoofer powered by a Phoenix digital amp. (I know it sucks, but hey it was free) I have a set of Focal 6.5 components, which I plan on installing in the doors. I don’t wish to replace the OEM stereo.

As for what I’m trying to accomplish hmm… well I would like a box the same size or as close as possible to this 1
installed

Box, Courtesy of Gr8boy. I’m looking to add some deep bass for me while in my car. I’m not looking to get anyone else’s attention, I don’t need to be heard coming down the block. I seldomly push it past the twenties. I just want good clear quality over some loud @ss music. So, according to the specs of the box what would you recommend one high end single 12” or your prefrence of two 10" subs? Also, which type of enclosure would you recommend for this application port, sealed, or bandpass? Thanks for all your help forbidden!

Deep bass with some degree of amplitude in it can be found in the Eclipse aluminum cone or titanium cone drivers. The single 12" aluminum in a 1.25 cu.ft sealed box will deliver amazing results. They are available in a couple of different forms depending on the amount of power you want to feed them. www.eclipse-web.com

I have a single JL Audio 12W6v2 in a sealed 1.25cuft. enclosure and it is great. I thought about doing 2 10's or possibly even 2 12's when I was planning my system. I'm glad I went with the single 12 as it gives me plenty of bass and still gives me usable trunk space.

Hey BRI could you either post or PM a pic of the enclosure, I would like to see what 1.25cuft looks like? Is the eclosure ported, sealed, or band pass?

^^^^^^ Dude, any particular part of what he said he wanted that you were not clear with?

1.25 cubic foot is a failry small sealed box. Take any 3 numbers that when multipled together = 2160 cubic inches. L x W x H = 2160 in. cu. internal volume, allow for the materials thickness on top of that. Use some cardboard to make the angle for the back of the box, then using the now known measurements that you have for height under the rear deck, the angle on the box, punch them into a volume calculator like the one found in this link.

http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp

Use volume calculate wedge enclosure 2.
