The process won't be any longer or harder than installing a CarPC in the RX-8 or installing a headunit/nav or nav only unit in any other car.

Cuz I remember that someone installed the Factory NAV system to his 8, and it required him to take out almost every thing in the car (rear seats, etc)
THe factory nav system is integrated into a special wiring harness which is why they had to replace it all...that won't be the case with this...listerally it is removing the head unit, unscrewing/unclipping the center dash piece and replacing it with this, an lcd screen, and running the cables to wherever you choose.

Oh and thanks for the links J8

Installing the stock navi? It is 10x harder than installing a CarPC in the trunk. With the CarPC you have to dismount the central tunnel covering, the upper dash, the stereo kit, and pass a "linear" set of cables.. with the stock navi, well read the thread around here (or the tech manual) it is a titanic work! :D

No... not stock navi. aftermarket... thus "nav only"... like in the catalog pics or "headunit/nav" like the 2DIN units from Alpine, Pioneer and Clarion.

It doesn't look like it.
And it looks like i was wrong. It'll play DVD-ROMS but not DVD Video which makes no sense.

Hmmm...maybe DVD roms are for the NAV info?

Let me quote you what it says here:
The AVIC-D2 unit will play DVDs through a DVD Changer or remote-mount DVD Player or Playstation2, XBox, 3rd source. The unit does not play DVD video's directly, but it does play DVD-ROM and DVD NAVIGATION discs

Of course it does. Probably the lawyers have something to do with that.

Either way, the thing has a lot of inputs and it's a really nice formfactor.
If we had a decent place to put it, it might be a done deal for me.
Oh and the price is great too.

Personally, i'm looking at doing some kind of carputer/nav combo so I can integrate a hymee scanalyser into the thing as well so inputs are what I'm after.

I've been looking for a aftermarket NAV system for a LOOOONG time. but sadly 8 is not mod friendly at ALLLLLL. STupid HU is one good example.

I really wish some bright minds here can figure something out .... like which one works which one doesnt .... and Im too dumb to find out(more like lack of HU knowlege)

It's simple... not technical... just simple logic. See the specs in the links I posted for US nav systems. If those specs fit the ones I posted here for screen size used in Japan... then that system will work.

They are on their way from Japan actually I'll keep everyone updated. I will post the item on Mazdaparts.com once I receive the first batch.

This thread was skimmed through yesterday I might have blacked out while reading a few posts (wife says it happens whenever she talks), but two questions went unanswered (i think).
1. This supports a 7" or so screen, but is it just a moveable mount or is it actually really cool and mechanized? Hell is the mount even included?
2. 1 DIN, 2 DIN, no din, just a den?

Im psyched about this because i *really* wanna do carpc stuff but before now the route to go was jack someo- er buy a nav screen mount n all. The major appealing factors for it were the mechanized movement with tilt etc., and also that it conformed so well to the cabin. What do you guys think in comparison with regard to these two items?

We shall find out for sure soon (they are enroute to me). From the pics, description, and other factors it appears it is a 'den' as you call it with a sliding mount. So it probably won't take a 1-dinner up there as it is designed for 7 inch widescreens it seems.

I'll post pics and how it works in detail as soon as it arrives as well.

If I had seen this thread before, I would be definitely on the "I want one of those so badly I think I wet myself" list......so please count me in

I see that your order is already on its way, but please please pretty please hold on to one piece for my 8...7" LCDs will fit OK, right ?

I see that the item is not listed yet, so could you let us know as soon as you have it in your hands ? And a small description of how it will work....Thanks

Shipping to Greece ? Ah, we'll discuss details later....

I so want this too. i have a carputer already built but the project stalled because of the lack of a good screen location.

I gues I'm still missing why people prefer this over the navi dash with its mechanized movement.
