The above will not fit anyway, nor will you be able to mount them anywhere besides their own base.
All LCD screens have some special holes and tracks on their back, so that you can mount them in different ways. The UMPCs don't

I am not sure of the size of the UMPCs or the UX but I'm pretty sure you can fit something like the Samsung's Q1 UMPCe in there..even without the mounting points many LCDs have. With a little bid of modification of the mounting hardware you can probably fit just about anything that fits within the size dimensions.

Another GREAT suggestion someone had is install a 7 inch lcd, then use an Ipod Video or other portable video player with video out and run it into the screen...then use a remote interface to control it.

I had the same idea (using my Archos Gmini402), but the thing that stopped me was the remote control -or rather the lack of it: I would have to have the Archos in sight in order to control it.

As for mounting UMPCs, it might be doable, but it would sure require a lot of custom work, and I don't know if they would fit in the panel. Maybe you could shed some light into this matter, since you have the panel in your hands

Well I mentioned to someone a completely different idea when it comes to a UMPC. Using an LCD touchscreen and just using the VGA out and USB for touchscreen on the UMPC...this way you would control it remotely.

As for the archos there is a remote so you could do that but knowing you, you have some grand Carpc in mind which is awesome and probably the way to go (I am in no way affiliated with this site nor do I vouch for their authenticity):

Yeap, I know about the Archos remote control, but alas it has limited functionality (i.e. it cannot control movies), and it's not actually "remote", as it uses a hard-wire to connect to the device.

Anyway, you are correct about the whole "PC in-store" thing My components are already on their way, so as soon as I receive this JDM panel, I will be ready to start installing in my 8

Or just get a CarPC running StreetDeck. NO need to program, etc. etc. with it. Just get the hardware (you can get that prebuilt too), install WinXP and then install StreetDeck... install in your car and you're done... ready to go. Nav, Mp3, internet radio and more.

check mp3car.com and streetdeck.com

Here is a one unit:

http://www.amazon.com/Nextar-P7-Pane.../dp/B000EY18LM

Here is a really high end unit:

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Streetp.../dp/B000BWSQ2G

I cannot vouch for the quality of either of these units as I have not seen them in person...nor have I verified their dimensions but they appear to be similar if not what you need. Cool thing is you could take it out and put it in another car using the mount that comes with it when you take a road trip in another vehicle.

I was referring to those external Navi that I can use to hook up to a screen that I put into this OEM navi dash that you are selling. The screeen and dash seems relatively cheap enuf but I've yet to find an alternative to the $2400 Alpine unit.

thanks Japan 8, i'll research into this Carpc option. Was hoping there would just be a relatively cheaper Navi only unit since I still want to use the OEM Audio control ( aboslutely love the steering wheel control). But would be cool to have a carPC. picking up Wifi and playing movies.. hmm

Well there is something called the Car2PC adapter. On a Mazda you just need to get the P.I.E. M-Bus adapter that goes into the rear CD changer port on the stock HU and plug the Car2PC adapter into that (and the adapter into the PC). That will allow you to use your steering wheel controls to change tracks, etc. on the PC and it will run the PC sound output to the stock HU. I haven't researched if StreetDeck has added the ability to use this with their software, but I do know that free/open source "front ends" like RoadRunner have made this addition (the programmer of it, guino, also has a RX-8 and is on this forum).

So you can have the best of both worlds. And I recommend this for just about all late model Mazda owners. Go CarPC... you don't have to know much to get one setup if you go with software like StreetDeck or soon Centrafuse. Both are commercial and include everything you need already. Just add hardware.

The Car2PC adapter we might sell...we tried wholesale with them right when it came out but they were not prepared for that type of business. Now I hear they are.

Then we could really offer quite the package:

1) this dash piece
2) screen
3) carpc
4) PIE plus Car2PC module to control audio from the steering wheel

Sounds like fun eh.

I really hate those Garmin and TomTom GPS, they look like **** (At least in the US market)

I was checking around and found this one.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...487005&CatId=0

Its made by a Korean Company called DVS. It seems ok, 7 in screen, size is 7.48"W x 4.92 L X 1.46 H. the spec could be found on the site, parts of the site has english but the rest .... so Im not even sure if I get this and something goes wrong, am I be a ble to get any support ? 1.25 LBs weight. Its going to be a quite slow Navigation unit since it only has 64 MB SDram and 1GB SD .... with Samsung Arm9 core @ 300MHz. Integrate GPS receiver SiRFstarIII .... I dont think this is going to fit the Dash.

Are you trying to figure out what is the biggest monitor you can cram in there?

There are dimensions of other LCDs that fit this unit earlier in this thread. I can give you the dimensions of the LCD mounting plate.

If you look at the PDF of the install guide for this thing you can see the monitor when hidden lies face down then rotates up when the 'door' is slid back. So it appears a larger height monitor could fit (although may block the road) then a widescreen 7 inch but I am not for sure on that.

I guess you could fit lots of other things into the hole I presume and not even put a screen in there....hmmmm

Give me a few minutes I'll ahve the dimensions of the hole (note the door slides back but leaves a bit of a lip...I'll measure to that lip).

The dimensions of the hole are approximately 9 inches by 5 inches (diagonally ~10 inches).

I'm thinking a bigger monitor can fit in there but don't quote me on that till we start seeing the first units begin installation...I'd put one in my car but I already have something up there.

Damn... these things are just flying out the door! Do I get a commission cut on this?

J/K

I imagine that the units for the Mazda6 and Mazda3 will make a similar splash once/if they become available.

The M3 kit and M6 kit are available now I can order some with the next shipment. I should start talking on those forums.

If you know anyone specifically I can make an order especially for them or they may inspire a large order .

Sorry... don't specifically know anyone looking for one right now, but I have seen various CarPC installs on Mazda6club.com, msprotege.com, mazdas247.com and of course mp3car.com. I'd imagine that there are many more who'd appreciate this new option for mounting their screens.
