No preamps, just speaker level signal. If you get an amp that can accept this, it is not a problem. That's what I have too.
Regarding removing the head unit, yes, there are threads you can use in the DIY section. One of them was for an Ipod connection, but it has detailed instructions how to remove the head unit.

yocoop,

You allcapped "NON" in the title. Try putting it in bold next time as well.

I have the non-Bose, standard stereo and I added an aftermarket amp that accepts both speaker level and line level inputs. I wanted to go with the line level inputs, so I would have more control on the input level to the amp. So, I bought two speaker to line level converters from crutchfield - here's the link.

Works and sounds great.

Does this mean that if I get an amp with speaker-level inputs , I won't need to use a LOC with the stock stereo system?

Are you adding a sub or adding front and rear speakers as well? This will tell you the direction you need to go. In all cases you need to use a powered LOC, this was you can set output gains on the unit. So whether it be a simple in line LOC like the Navone piece or the highly advanced multi channel LOC like the Audio Control LC6, either should be used instead of the basic built in LOC's in the amplifiers.
