Official HACK the NAV Thread
Well after adding video and other toys to the Nav I am yet again anxious to start another project...one that is far more ambitious
I believe the next logical step is to hack the nav's GUI/Interface/Operating Rom/Firmware and then maybe the Map discs
I considered this a while back but with so little info to go on and several failed attempts by very competent forum members I gave up...well I've been inspired by a really nice hack of the Acura Nav system which you may see here:
http://linuxkiddies.com/bysin/navi/
Granted it is only to change the startup screen but they are working on removing the warning message
My initial goals for this project:
1.Remove the warning screen
2.Enable rotation of Startup screen images
3.Add personalized icons for Marked Points
More Advanced Goals:
1.Change voice (this may be easier than we think)
2.Hack Map Disc to manually add maps from updated Navteq map databases whenever we choose to burn a new one.
Extreme Ideas:
1.Play digdug
2.Alarm Clock
3.Dancing Hampsters
I'm going to use the assistance of some friends of mine who legally repair/mod xboxs for a living. If I could get a hold of a used nav dvd unit to use for testing that would be great since right now I'll be using mine...which is kind of scary
So I could use anyone's help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Really cool stuff. Unfortunately, I can be of no help but to offer encouagement.
One thing to note, as you probably know already (from your HU upgrade), there are different versions of the NAV system (I have the older version). Would you be deveoping with the hopes of being compatible with both, or would I have to send my unit in and get it upgraded first?
Though it might suck for me, it would probably be easier from a development standpoint to design it just for the latest version, then see if it's compatible with the older. I guess there is a possiblilty of it working on both without any tweaking, but I wouldn't count on it.
Either way -
I NEED DANCING HAMSTERS

actually I used to have the old nav unit before I went to the service department and made my case that the nav stinks...it worked out and they gave me the new one underwarranty and a free rental car while they installed it! :D
I found a used Nav unit (just the dvd unit) for around $300...there is no way I'm going to spend that much but I'll fight with the seller to bring it down...it is kind of a pain to tinker with the unit since I need an RGBs display to do testing (and a DC power source...which is easier to find)
