OmniFi DMP1

Damn this thing is pimpin'! I just thought I'd post it in case anybody else was looking. I've been looking around for an MP3 player for my car and I've finally settled on this one (pending my ability to use OverLOAD's cassette player technique to add RCA inputs via the cassette player).

In addition to a 20GB hard-drive, the DMP1 (digital media player) also has a wireless network connection, so basically, you pull into your driveway and your MP3 player in your car automatically downloads your MP3's from your computer in your house. I haven't figured out how/where to mount the faceplate for it (sunglass tray is too small), but taking a suggestion from their forums, I may route it to the center console and leave it loose so it can easily be passed around the car to passengers.

Not too many reviews on it yet because it's brand new. Crutchfield just started selling them a few days ago and already sold-out of their first shipment.

Crutchfield is good but they tend to be rather expensive so shop around before you buy

Yeah, I know.... Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, OmniFi has only partnered with a few retailers and as far as I can tell, Crutchfield is the only online one. It's pretty much either buy from Crutchfield or wait until they start showing up at local retailers (Tweeter, HiFi Buys, Sound Advice, Ultimate Electronics, Audio King, Soundtrack, Magnolia Hi-Fi in case anybody was interested in checking them out). And I want it now!!!! :D

Any update on your installation or use of the OmniFi system? I am looking at it myself and am really about the inability to connnect directly to the Bose system. I am concerned about the potential degrading of the sound by use of the "fix" shown here or a fm modulater . . . . anyone care to share their impression of the quality of the sound vs. the radio or cd.

It's the last time it is going to appear on Woot, so you won't see that price again. They had a special deal with RF to sell it cheap to spur more interest in it. I'm waiting on the AuxMod to install mine.

Check ebay. They have several.... wonder if this is a sign that they are not as good as the hype.

It's because Rockford discontinued the OmniFI. It is a decent product but as far as it's future is concerned, it's dead.

Seems to play all the formats I am interested in. Got the complete kit with WiFi for 150 on ebay. Seemed like a good price......

Now I am concerned that I got lost trying to follow the discussion about the AUX IN connection. Guess I have my homework cut out for me.

Lastly, I am very interested options for mounting a faceplate, like maybe in the glove compartment ... or maybe on a proclip like mount.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations.

Mazdaparts.com sells the MP3 faceplate for the 8. You might be able to fit the omnifi plate in there. You will need the PIE adapter. Do not under any circumstance buy a FM modulator. They just don't work. The PIE adapter is the only one that is available right now. There is another device that someone on this forum is selling but there is a long long wait list.

The wireless feature is pretty neat.. however I think the reason it's considered a 'dead' product is the wide availablity of other MP3 harddrive systems.

IPods and others do the same job, if not better in most cases.

I personally have a Creative Labs, Nomad Zen Xtra Jukebox (isn't that a mouthful!). It plays your standard MP3 and Media player formats, but the kicker for me is that this model is 60gigs! (They make 20,30,40 and 60).

It's only slightly larger than an IPod.. about the same size as a laptop harddrive but about 2x as thick.
http://us.creative.com/products/prod...4&product=9288

Sure it doesn't have wireless, however I've got mine mounted with a ProClip (from proclip.usa) right next to my dash. Just a single connector in the top going to my PIE interface under the dash and it's all hooked up. When I want new songs, I simple pick it up and carry it into the house, or work.

The only minor drawback is I don't use an AC adapter.. so I have to recharge it about once every 3-5 days (doesn't take long but have to pull it out of the car).

So the OmniFi is nice in that it is wired directly into the car's power and the wireless.

However since mine is 60gigs, I have every album I own on that thing (about 300 or so) , the only time I need to add more songs is when I buy a new album

I'm waiting for the next generation models of MP3, the ones that have BLUETOOTH :P , wireless is nice, but if you had bluetooth, you could acomplish so much more I'd think.

Thanks for the data. I am searching the entire site for info on PIE and LC6 interfaces. This is new stuff to me. I hope to find some drawings of how this all fits together.

I understand that the OmniFI system may to older technology, but since I am configuring my entire house to use streaming audio, I just thought it would be cool to try the WiFi aspects of this unit ... and the price was right. (150 for complete system)

Regards the 20Gig drive, I have over 2200 songs loaded up and that used 13Gig. Thats good enough for me.

Now, I just hope I can track down and understand how the PIE interface is used, how I will mount the faceplate, and find a good mount point for the HD.

Thanks again and I will keep watching for the new solutions you folks come up with.

Omnifi Install

I installed my omnifi unit and it is pretty slick. Currently have the display in the center cupholder area. I think though that I am going to put it where the ashtray is. I have tried to use FM modulation and is SUCKS! Dont even waste your time unless you really don't want to take the head unit out. I just got the PIE adapter and RCA connection in the mail and plan on hooking it up soon. Will post some picks when I'm done.

On sale today only! 7-8-05

This unit for the car plus the home unit together for $199 + $5 s/h. Woot!

It's only available today, until they run out. I was thinking about getting this, but it's not "PlaysForSure" ready.

DMP1 now installed with PIE adapter

Much better now without FM modualtion. Now all I have to do is mount the faceplate in the cigarette lighter area. The PIE adapter was not that hard to put in once I figured out how to get the head unit bolt out. I need some fabrication help to get the lighter area mount figured out.

Good to hear you have goten the OmniFi hooked up. I am learning a lot from everyone here.

I am trying to work with proclips.com to get work out some type of mount for the faceplate. At this point, they have custom mounts for some really similar items, but I have not gotten enough data to know if they have one that will work or can be modified. Anyway, for those who do not want to modify the dash, I will send a follow up if I get more data.

Integrating OmniFi with Stereo

I just got and email from Eric. He says that the current AUXMOD, basic and advanced, does not support steering wheel functions for the OmniFi system but could be convinced if there is a market. If there are enough of you out there, and we can convince him, I will send my unit to him for testing.
