Possible mounting for 7" LCD?

I'm one of the many who are trying to solve the placement issue of a 7" touchscreen VGA in the rx-8. The options developed so far for permanent mounting are not really my taste (motorized etc.) so I figured I could mount a display temporarily until a better solution comes out (stock nav dash pieces start being sold without the nav etc.). Well I was given this site on another forum (mp3car.com) and they have a clip specially made for the 8 here:

RX-8 Proclip angled mount

My idea was to use that mounts predrilled holes with a product from this site:

RAM Mounting Systems

Therefore, a 7" display could be placed near the climate controls and easily be moved when needed access to them (maybe even hidden).

My question is whether you think the proclip could hold the weight of another mounting bracket and a 7" screen. Even if it doesn't, the price's are cheap enough that it's worth a try.

Before you all start bashing....I know this isn't a permanent solution but just something to get me through until one does come along (with no damage or drilling to the car).

Let me know what you all think

One way to mount a 7inch LCD is to use a cellular phone gooseneck and route it through the hole just to the left of the glove box. I mounted my Lilliput touchscreen this way and it works PERFECTLY. Full access to all controls, no interference with the glove box and angle slightly towards the driver side. I will try and take a picture of the install tonight or tomorrow and post it for you.

How about mounting it inside the glove box?

The carputer is currently under the passenger seat. I have been having problems with the touchscreen only working for the first 4-5 minutes while I use it but then not functioning if I don't touch it for awhile. The screen still displays, but the touch interface stops working. I am thinkng it might be the 6ft extension cable. So I am going to try moving the computer forward in the car and just using the cable it came with.

glxyjones,
You are about 120 miles from me, take you about 2 hours to get to my house. So if you want me to install it with you just give me a shout.

I just got my Lilliput and flexible arm in recently. I will try mounting it just to see how it looks although it won't be functional until I build my computer. Due to lack of funds that might take a while

I was thinking of using an old laptop like I've seen some due. My only question is...

Is there enough power from the cigarette lighter to power both a laptop and touchscreen? (for temporary purposes)

AWillSea-

I noticed that the covering on the arm in your 8 and the stock photo from the manufacturer you linked look different. Did you wrap it in something, tape ect., and is that just for looks? Also, does the arm allow you to run cable back through itself or does that coating hold the wire to the arm? BTW it looks awesome! Thanks!

I don't know if this is related or not, but the Lilliput driver that came on the CD would not recover from suspend and would sometimes stop working for me. I got an updated driver from the guy I bought the display from and it seemed to fix the problem.

You can try it if you want:

Good luck,

the arm I purchased comes with a flexible plastic tubing that I believe will allow me to run cable through it so that it doesn't hang off the real medal arm.

AWillsea,

Would you mind giving some diy on how you attached your arm behind the dash and the easiest way to access it? Thanks!
