Question question about radar placement

i was wondering before i hard wire it in place if i place my radar dectector over toward the left of the steering wheel would it cause it to lose a lot of range or would it be fine. i know it would cut down laser but if i get lasered im caught already so forget it. i was just need to know if the radar would still be working or if i should just leave it in the middle of the windsheild. thanks

I say leave it in the middle. mount high as well. I put mine under the rear view mirror.

I notice that my radar is most effective in the middle of the windshield. I lost some range when I was mounting it near the passenger side of the vehicle. By the way I have a Vector 995 if that helps.

Actually, radar is more line-of-sight. Placement in that area is technically better than high. I had a detector mounted where you show with no problems, except is is a little more visible from the outside.

I just moved mine from the middle to the spot you're talking about after being pulled over and given a ticket for not having a front plate - I know the cop targeted me because of my radar detector - I was at a stoplight, he was one lane over and shot me with radar while I was sitting there, and then swung in behind and pulled me over. (detectors ARE legal here) I took it down altogether for a few days, and then decided to black it out (whistler with silver top) and mount it on the side. From outside the car, it is very difficult to see it, and I have noticed no change in detection - I haven't hard wired mine yet tho - I ran an extension power cord (hidden) just so I could test it out for a bit. So far, so good.

If you've already purchased a fixed unit, put it somewhere above the dash. Placement other than that is almost negligible, in my experience.

I have a remote unit with hard wired sensors behind the front bumper and in the roof, placed here:

This is exactly why mine is hard wired, remote, and hidden, so I can turn it off and he'll never know it is there.

Cool High....

Mounted up by (and powered from) the mirror, if you're not too concerned with laser detection.

The detector will sound off long before you see the trooper, and well before he gets a "visual" on your car, as you crest a hill.

Also doesn't attract "interest from thieves or troopers, up behind the black tint.

thanks for all the responses im gonna read up on the mirror diy and see how that goes.

I have mine mounted above the mirror as well. Working well so far. I used adhesive on the mount instead of the suckers (that tinted area is textured and I had trouble getting a good seal). Since the detector rests on the mirror, the adhesive doesn't have to resist vertical forces.

When you have the detector behind the black dots, doesn't this reduce the effectiveness? It is such a logical place if the suction cups would stick.

Mounted low you lose rear laser and alot of rear radar.
