Remotely tracking our nav's GPS reciever?
Is there any way we could use an external GPS tracking device to pick up our car's GPS reciever antenna and track the car remotely wherever it goes? If so how could this be done?
Just curious if this would be possible to do in case the car were ever stolen.

Didn't this topic come up just a few days ago in another thread?
I worked on a circuit board for a NAV system for Rockwell back in 1995. I remember a bit about the GPS unit. It's a receiver - it doesn't broadcast anything.
You used the words 'receiver antenna' yourself. Like your car radio's antenna - no one can tell what you're listening to with your car's radio antenna.
Now, if you wanted to try to rig up a tracking device like that you might possibly hack into your NAV unit to find the GPS position information and feed that into a separate transmitter that you design, build and install. However, the FCC places some limitations on what we transmit and how.
If you really want such a feature you should shop for an integrated alarm system (I googled 'car alarm gps location') and found this link:
http://www.gpsonsale.com/vehicletrac...-CAR-TRACK.htm
However, to my knowledge the number of stolen RX-8s in the US is zero I would simply recommend you keep careful track of your keys. No key - no drive.

I dont have a GPS navigation in my car but as far as I understand there is no type of transmitter in our car. We don't have any kind of On-Star system so bascially you just have a GPS *receiver* not trasmitter.

but again, the cell-phone transmits - the GPS doesn't transmit. The only things that transmit GPS signals are the satellites in space.

Ahh..it's only a reciever and not a transmitter. Shame.
Yeah I wasn't interested in buying any aftermarket system. Was just hoping that in the unforseen event of my 8 getting towed away or stolen I could resort to tracking the built in GPS unit, but as you guys have already mentioned, it doesn't transmit its position.
So much for thinking I had "added" security.

To all you geniuses who are suggesting I buy a GPS cell phone with tracking services and track it that way...hmm...let me think about that one for a second....
Yeah, I should probably PLAN on having my car stolen or towed away in that case that way I can make sure to throw the cell phone in there to track it before that happens.

while I do like the idea of paying for a cheap extra phone with GPS features and getting the online tracking feature, if you stuck it on a charger and threw it under the seat for "safe measure" wouldn't the GPS feature NOT work? I was always under the assumption that you had to have some line of sight to the sky to pick up at least 3 satellite signals. With the thick-*** seat over it, not to mention a roof, and possibly being inside some parking structure I would be willing to bet the GPS phone under the seat trick might not work.

i kind post this as an idea just as a half joke. but after i thought about it really could work. is it the best way, i doubt it. but probably a hell of a lot cheaper than lojack and you have a built in emergency phone.

I have something like this set up in my car. Using my gps and bluetooth I can upload my cars lat & long to my server which in turns puts foward that information to google maps. Google maps takes that info and puts a dot on a map in real time. It can be tracked in real time from any computer with internet access.
My setup is much like the one at http://www.stompboxnetworks.com/ except for one key difference, i'm using my carputer as the CPU.
My system spits out a picture like this:
PS- no that is not my car so don't try and find me.
