Retractable Key Question.

I just got a 2004 Rx8 and it only came with one key :-/ and its not the cool retractable one............i found that you can buy the retractable key @ rx8garage, but what do i need to program it? I read on the forums you need like 3 keys to program one, well what if i only have one to start with???

They will give you the instructions - but there is also a thread in the DIY section that explains what to do.
I believe you only need to have one key to do the programming (but might be wrong about that).

programing the remote key/keychain for any car is simple and can be done by anyone that can follow directions. Just get the key cut and then program it.

I am not sure but programing the switchblade key to the car might mean the original key fob wont work...not sure, but usualy the car can only be tied to one signal...now if they both used the same signal it should be fine

There are two parts - key and keyless entry. I believe that the RX-8 will store up to 8 entries for each. For the key, you need to have two existing keys to add a new one. I hear the valet key will work with another existing one, but I used two regular keys when adding the 2005 key. For the keyless entry, I used the two 2004 remotes and then added the 2005 remote.

The dealer can reprogram everything, but charges big bucks. If you bought your car new and the dealer shorted you on the keys, maybe you can get them to reprogram a new 2005 key/keyless for free. Good luck.

Dealer told me today the key was $25.00 and programming was $80.00. I mentioned I didn't need to program and just wanted the key and explained what I had read here and she ask to see it for herself. Should I show her these threads?

She had mentioned something about having to use the computer for the Immobiliztion System. Is she correct or just looking for $80.00.

All that I am reading is to program the retractable key.

forgtet taht order the key (comes with fob and key) and then bring the key part to the parts department and have them copy it to your current key...they'll do it for free then leave and program all the keys in your car on your own using the instructions

I think you need to use the computer if you don't already have 2 existing keys and remotes (keyless entry). If you order a key - it will probably be the 2004 stock key, not the 2005 switchblade style.

Does anybody know where you can get a blank retractable key for the switch blade remote for a reasonable price? I just need the blank, I already have the switch blade remote.

Yeah, that is where I got my blank. Tell Matt that you are a member of the RX8club for an additional discount.

So I only have one typical 04 remote and a key. No Valet key and no switchblade. I I buy a switchblade with a blank key I can reprogram the remote myself and have the key cut at the dealer? Thanks.
