RX8 & THE MAC MINI FROM APPLE

THE NEW MAC MINI IS PRETTY COOL TO USE IN A RX8 CAUSE THE SIZE OF THE MINI IS THE SIZE IS JUST A TAD BIGGER THEN A DVD ROM.
THE IPODS ARE COOL BUT THATS OLD NEWS. I THINK WE ARE PASSED THE MP3 CRAZE OR MP3 PLAYERS INSTALLED IN CARS. THE MAC MINI COME IN 40 GIGS OR 80 GIGS. PLUS THE USER CAN INSTALL BOTH PLATFORMS ON THE MAC MINI MAC OSX & WINDOWS XP...SO THE CHOICE OF OPERATING SYSTEM PLATFORM IS COVERED. ALSO WITH A FEW APPLICATIONS INSTALLED ON THE MAC MINI IT CAN BE VOICE ACTIVATED. SO THE NEED TO BE HANDS FREE IS ACCOMPLISHED.
PLUS IT COMES WITH WIRELESS NETWORK CARD OPTION AND BLUE TOOTH ENABLE. SO AS YOU FLY BY ANY MAJOR CITY YOU CAN PULL OUT A WiFi DETECTOR.
HMMMMM YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET ONLINE FROM WIRELESS NETWORKS IF YOU NEED TO JUMP ON THE NET FROM THE STREET. IF YOUR ON THE GO ALOT AND YOU NEED A MOBILE OFFICE IN YOUR RX8 A SMALL USB HUB CAN BE INSTALLED ALSO.
MICROSOFTS OFFICE FOR MAC WORKS EXCELLENT. SO YOU CAN POP IN A CD ROM WITH FILES SO YOU CAN IMPORT THEM INTO YOUR MAC..OR YOU CAN BURN A CD ON THE FLY IF U HAVE LAST MINUTE DEADLINE AND YOU CANT USE YOUR HOME PC. THERE ARE SOME USERS ALREADY INSTALLING THERE OWN FLAT SCREENS SO IT CAN BE DONE AND MODIFIED TO YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS. PLUS THE COST OF THE MINI IS GREAT..
PEACE OUT DA GREEKHITMAN
MACKING WITH RX8 & MAC!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, I'm an RX8 owner. I plan on adding a Mac Mini or a PC to the 8. Maybe both I'll be using Matt's S-Video box to send the signal to the head unit NAV screeen. This will all be done this summer...

And here I thought it was being written from a MAC mini and that was just a flaw of the computer...everything being in caps.

As for the harshness of us asking you to go easy on the caps, no one here is putting your head on a platter. Take it as either a lesson learned, and/or we'l take it as an accident.

Just for future referance, if you already weren't aware, non-caps is simply what forum users like to call forum etiquette.

Aside from all this, yes, the MAC mini is a neat little machine.

powebook and vocals in RX8

Did a quick vocal take on the fly...sounded pretty good i might say...didnt get any noise feedback...
Would like to install a DIGI 02 from digidesign...
you guys have any good suggestion to install seprate power supply?
The M-Box is pretty cool but i dont want to use the USB i rather go Firewire...
i know im gonna need some kind of converter.. Dont worry thats a little bit out of my range to install it...i guess im gonna have to shop around to local installers to see whos idea is best..
Is there any certain peice of information i should look for or ask them....
Oh am i walking a thin line on warrenty isssue?
hopefully not if the power isnt interfering with the main electrical system.
I use Mackie HR824's in the recording studio..so im gonna really push the base up...
I'll Run Logic 7 pro in the studio and Logic Express 7 in the RX8.
After I finish i will upload the tracks to MACIDOL.COM..I'll make the tracks downloadable.
peace.
Hitman.

That may be a tough one for you. The the Mac Mini forum in http://www.mp3car.com. If you go PC, there are several options available with the OPUS PSU being the most popular...

unfortunately this isn't the best idea...for the most part it is way too expensive and the options for interfacing are **** poor

really the best AND least expensive thing is a Modded XBOX, you could get:
1. used xbox: $95
2. 160 gig HD $55
3. Modchip Alladin $12

And that is about it...maybe a nice wireless controller (get the logitech pro ones!)

but check this dock out:

Xbox mod.... zzzz. No nav. No Wifi. No web browsing capabilities. Does it play DVDs? Burn 'em? What if you don't give a sh&t about playing games... or have a PSP?

Car computer is a better more flexible solution, but will cost you a tad more.

of course it plays DVDs...but F-that just fill up the hard drive with divx copies...you'll have several movies in space of a DVD

with xbox media center it plays all audio formats with visualization (mp3, acc, wmf, etc.), all movie files (ie Drift Bible)

You can get a web browser...and mine already has Wifi...just use an FTP program in the house to transfer files to the car...all through wifi at g speeds.

It does play xbox games too but I don't do that

oh did I mention only few second boot times

as for GPS...there is no great pc gps software anyway...and I have the NAV and I never use it

truemagellen = 1
Japan8 = 0

It's half time, I'm wondering what Japan8 will come up with next. It's bound to be a good one... :D

Good for you. I have better things to do than waste my time making divx copies of DVD's I already own and would not otherwise wish to make Dvix copies of.

And an xbox media center playing all audio formats has what to do with the conversation? A car pc can do it and more formats as they come out. You can relatively easily build your own front end for a car pc... windows, mc os, linux, unix... or you can pick from many available for free on the net.

What the helll are you talking about... ftp isn't secure! I sure at hell am not going to be running that service on my home PC. Better security to build your own app using VBScirpt, WSH and WMI (and not particularly diffficult). Or if you have well defined security on your home network, just copy folder to folder.

Wifi at g speeds is limited. Unless your wifi is via a pci card or a pc card, then you will be stuck when the next version of it comes out.

I have little doubt there is an x-box emulator for the PC, and there are emulators for PS-one and PS-two. Plus computer games. But I don't play any of them and I have a PSP and Nintendo DS if I should happen to feel like it at a rest area one day.

So what about your few seconds boot time? If you think that means anything then you definitely haven't done your homework. I point people to http://www.mp3car.com for a reason... they've seen and done it all... like here for the RX-8. Want fast boot times? There are many ways to do it, but it all starts with striping down windows. You can then change to EWF and put windows on a CF card or just run it from HDD still. Either way... some people can get machine to boot in about 12 seconds. AND there are wonderful PSU's already designed to work with carpc's... no need for significant mods or anything. Check out "Opus" on the mp3car site.

GPS? Actually i hear there is some fair GPS software out there for the PC. Those that I've looked at seem to be pretty good. A lot of people all over the world on mp3car use various software packages, such as the nav software... ask them what their opinions are...

Oh yeah... and you can ADD bluetooth to a carpc. If you go with a total headunit raplacement, you'll want am/fm radio,,, for which there are some fm products that work visa usb, but nothing on the am/fm front completed yet.

this was not a 'battle' I was simply informing you on a viable alternative that is the most cost effective...under $200 is a great deal for a powerful PC that handles all of your audio/video needs IMHO

Never was. The discussion began with real pcs, and you offered the xbox mod as a cheaper solution. I gave reasons why it was a different solution and thus inferior if your needs were broad. You then refuted it in order to support your prefered solution. I gave a line by line of how it was not a replacement for a PC solution, but rather was a solution for someone who wants more than a iPod, but doesn't need navigation, internet or any of that stuff. That is what lead us to where we are now.

$200 (is that including all the mods you need?) is a great price. But I both need and want more than it can provide... so it was never an option for me. You can also think of it as why you bought an RX-8 instead of a SRT-4 (need I give more explanation than that?).

Do you have the power consumption figures on that? Has anything been posted on regulated 12V power and startup/shutdown for them?

I never looked up the power consumption of a xbox, but I suspect it isn't so hot. Pentium processors eat serious power. The Mac Mini is pretty efficient as well as Mobile Pentium and Athalon chip based boards. The VIA C3 doesn't have the same punch as the Intel or AMD, but power consumption is slightly better and the price is a lot better.
