samsung galaxy tab as your radio??
I work for tmobile and i am facscinated with the samsung galaxy tab. So much that i wanted to incorporate one in my rx8. Removing the old radio and putting one in. Now i know that anything is possible with some hard work and effort, but im a little bit optimistic about this one. Any words of encouragement or suggestions wouls help. .

As for steering wheel controls.... I program apps for Android OS, and it could be very possible. The only issue you would run into is connecting the controls into the tablet itself. Personally, I would try to attach them via the USB - Assuming this is how you plan to permanently power the device, you would need a simple splitter. Then you would have to make a program for the Galaxy Tablet that would see the signals as "directions" for what to do. Making a stand-alone program, whereas the the steering wheel controls ONLY work in the program, would be very, very difficult. The easiest way is to make a program that see's "Universal Signals" and does what they should.
Easiest way to explain this - Imagine having a touchscreen panel connected to a regular PC. You want to, say, select movies off of this to play, pause, etc. The easiest way to do this would be to make a program that see's, say, the letter "P" as play, the letter "S" as stop, the letter "F" as forward, etc., on the keyboard. BUT, the issue with this, is that the letter "P" or "S" would still be being pressed on the computer as a whole. None the less, this is the easiest way. The other option is to limit the letter "P" or "S" to working ONLY when you have that program open on the PC.
So, to recap on this:
- Making sound come out could be relatively easy, with the correct splitters, adapters, etc.
- Steering wheel controls are basically shot unless you get someone to program a custom Android OS app for you
My suggestion? This is based on what I plan to do - I have a touchscreen deck in already. My plan is to replace OEM Navigation with a Tablet, and simply have to stream the audio via bluetooth to my deck. That way, I can still take the tablet out and use it (Unless I get a cheap one, then permanently mount it).
There's my .02... extended version

I was actually just about to post the very same question ha, i work at best buy and this was one project that i wanted to work on, but the catch to mine is not only do i want it as my stereo but i want to make an app that also controls my ac works with the steering wheel controls and im sure that there could possibly be a way to get the samsung to work with a 5.1 system, in true 5.1 much like how some logitech 5.1 speakers use matrix to make 5.1 from a 2.1 system.

Agreed. Just saying that it would sound better simulated 5.1 than not at all.

OP. Anything IS possible with enough fabrication. I've seen everything you can imagine fabbed into an automobile. Waterfalls, flame throwers, soda machines... this list goes on and on. First things first, do you have a competent fiberglass fabber in your area? That's going to be first and foremost. I'd talk with him first. We'll go from there.

Steering wheel controls will work fine if you use Bluetooth to connect to your stereo. I use the GROM Audio AUX-In adapter + the Bluetooth module to accomplish this.

This works great with my Cyanogen modded Evo. Also, Torque really is an awesome app.

That's all music is. Your headunit just outputs 4-channel. There are a few albums out there released in true 5.1 (think U2 did one), but 99.9% of albums are just stereo.

Only in the last few years has it became common place for 5.1 on DVDs. So most of your "older" movies are all still in stereo. I guess it depends on how old you are as to what movies you consider "classic". If your first DVD was Transformers, well then, I'm sure you're whole collection is 5.1.
And any video you get online (youtube, hulu, etc) is obviously stereo.

Actually you know, I am just thinking, the Double Din Metra kit is 7" wide, and just shy of 4" tall (Or it is 4"). If you went with the First gen one (I know your wanting the second gen), you could almost make it fit right into the metra kit, as the device is 7.5" wide by 4.8" tall - Some modification to the kit and you would have it.
Haha, now I'm thinking of doing this...

The gent in paimon's video did just that. Mounted the old version into a double din hole.
But with the newer model, you're looking at big fab work. OP, expect $500 at least for fabrication alone. I'm guessing he's going to have to slightly relocate the A/C controls, toss the ash tray area and possibly toss the information screen up top.
EDIT: Also, maybe this was obvious, but I think you'd be stuck to using it in vertical orientation only.

haha, yes. I was the one talking about simulating 5.1, and i wanted the 10.1 inch screen vertical orientation, I'm not sure if the OP was refering to the 7" or the 10.1" but the new one albeit bigger is much, Much, more smooth fast and if i could program or find someone to program the A/C controls as an app it should fit right in there vertically after removing the controls.

Wow so im not the only one thinking about doing this. Cool.
Well i still need a couple fixes before starting this project up. I was thinking of installing the Galaxy Tab 7'' since it seems like it would fit just fine with out any cosmetic alterations
Thanks a whole bunch though for all the feedback. And ill keep you all posted once i get it going.
