so yeah, i blew my jl 500/1 amp in about a week. heat issues. don't get me wrong, i had the jl with a 10w7 and it bumped hard and very loud in my trunk. so i guess a word of advice is if you live in a hot area (so. kali), dont put a fiberglass sheet over the little hole in the trunk (where my amp was). if you put a fiberglass sheet remember to drill several holes, i had about 12 and it surely wasn't enough. i hear a lot about jl amps being hard to overheat, but believe me, it can be done. i get a new amp for free due to warranty, but thats not for 3 weeks. i miss my bass already

When i get around to it, i am going to have a cover for my amp, which also powers a 10W7, but i am going to have a pretty big design cut out from the cover, would that be enough ventilation? or do i still need venting fans?

All depends on how creative you want to get with it...I've been working with car stereo fabrications for over 12 years...i could come up with all kinds of cool ideas...if you take a shot of your trunk with the lid in place and with it raised I can give you some ideas...just PM me..
