Subs/amp/ohms - Need tech help.

I searched but did not find the specific answers and explanation I need.
Can someone please explain this for me ?

I ordered 2 4080 sub boxes.
I am looking at the JL 10W3v2 subs.

Nominal Diameter: 10 inches (250 mm)
Continuous Power Handling: 300 Watts
Voice Coil: 2.25" diameter, 4-layer, Kapton former
Available Configurations: Dual 2 ohm, Dual 4 ohm or Dual 6 ohm
Xmax (one-way, linear): 0.51"-0.58" (13.0-14.7 mm) depending on specific model
Sealed Enclosure Range: 0.60-0.90 cu.ft. (17.0-25.5 liters)
Ported Enclosure Range: 1.00-1.50 cu.ft. (28.3-42.0 liters)
VRC™ Technology: YES
Elevated Frame Technology: YES

Amp wise, I am looking at a JL "Slash" series.
"The bottom line of the R.I.P.S. system is: Optimum power, at any impedance between 1.5 ohm and 4 ohm per channel, at any vehicle voltage between 11V and 14.5V."
It looks like the amp has smarts to adjust to any ohm speakers and give full power.

Here is where I need help.
I see available: 250/1, 300/2, 500/1 (ones that I think will apply to my application)
I see the subs come in dual 2,4,6 ohm voice coils.

Here is where I am stuck.
I do not understand which amp to select and why. (mono, 2 channel ??)
Same for the subs. Which ohm rating is the best choice for my application ?
How do dual voice coils factor into this ?
And, how would I wire this ?

I was going to have Tweeter do it, but I had serious issues with the installer.

Thanks for any info and suggestions.

Subs....

I presume you will be mounting the '4080's opposite each other, on each side of your trunk?.....perhaps not the optimum, but we will work with that.

That amp isn't 'smart' it will just tolerate any impedance in that range, max power will give less sound as the impedance rises.

Since you have two independant sub enclosures, you will probanbly wire them in stereo, left and right. Each driver has two voice coils, you would want to use both for most output. So you would wire both the 'left' drivers coils together, in series, then the same for the right channel. If you get the 2x2ohm drivers, this adds nicely to the 4ohm amp output.

I personally would forgo stereo, in a sub environment it is not much benefit, and can cause problems. I would buy the 500/1 amp (mono) and wire each drivers coils in series, to 4ohms, then wire both subs together in parallel to give between 2 & 3 ohms total impedance. This would give the absolute maximum output, without stereo problems, and without possible 'phase cancelation' from having the 4080s opposite each other.

As usual, this is my take on it - I would love to hear opposing/conflicting views.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I looked on the JL site.
http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/pdfs/10W3v2_MAN.pdf

Are you suggesting the middle picture under wiring options -> 'voice coils in series' ?

Do I read that correctly that it shows using 4ohm voice coils wired in series
results in 4 ohms ?

Thanks

Diagram.....

Yes, that centre pic is how it should look....

Wire both voice coils in series, then wire both the subs together, in parallel.
....if it is 2x 2ohm coils in series = 4ohms, then wiring in parallel lowers the resistance back around 2ohms.

(You must be richer than me - JLs in 4080 custom subs! Nice!) :D

I'm looking at a similar possible configuration, but with only one sub. I'm thinking of the 4080 box (just one) and a single JL 10W3v2. I wonder about the benefits/tradeoffs of wiring the two voice coils in series vs. parallel. I understand the impedence differences, but I wonder if there are any other reasons to consider series vs. parallel connections (for just one sub). I expect that arriving at a final impedence of 2 ohms is better than 4 ohms, assuming adequate amp performance, right? So, a 2 X 4 ohm in parallel ( 2 ohms final) would be better than a 2 X 2 ohm in series (4 ohms final)? Is there any audible difference in series vs. parallel?

Also, in the JL Audio amp lines, what is the realistic difference between the e-series and the Slash series? The e1400D (400wx1 into 2 ohms) is about the same price as the 250/1. Is there a noticeable sound difference between them?

I am clearly not a pro.. but everything I have read says 4 ohms is the best.
So I am using 2 10W3v2 D4 (4 ohm voice coils)
Voice coils wired in series, which will make the ohms 8, then running 2 subs in parallel,
which will bring the ohms down to 4.

I am using a Slash 500/1 for the subs since 250W is good per sub.
I doubt I would notice a difference between the e-series and the Slash...
but I went with the Slash.

Got my 2 4080's yesterday.
The quality is top-notch.
VERY nice stuff.
