I am in the process of building a custom closed subwoofer enclosure for my RX-8. The It will be located in the trunk.
I would like to know which speaker orientation is better: front facing versus rear facing.
I didn't fine the answer on this forum, maybe I didn't look at the right place.
If someone has the answer, please advise, it would be very much appreciate.
Sub-bass waves are physically very long. A full 40Hz cycle is about 28ft in length. So rule of thumb for maximum perceived volume in a vehicle is to have the subs right up against you, or as far away as possible. Therefore, subwoofers facing rear and as close to the taillights as you can get. If the subs are only 4-5ft away from your ears, you'll be sitting in a "null" area that's frequency dependent. You'll certainly hear the subs, but it won't be as loud. That said, there's also an awful lot of reflections and cabin gain. So there's plenty of other variables in play.
What kind of box are you planning on building? What's your plan? There's already several vehicle specific enclosures made for the RX8, just in case you didn't know.

I didn't know this kind of thing existed for the RX-8. But it would've be a good solution it I didn't have also a NOS bottle in the trunk:

that's a great location for the subs because it leaves a lot of usable truck space.

Yes, I can but I would like something I can remove easily when I go to the track. I thought of having the amplifier screwed to the subwoofer box with only one quick connect plug. This way I will be able to remove the subwoofer and the amplifier all together.
By the way, you have a very nice installation. It's not easy to make something clean and functional in a car. It takes time to remove the trim without broking anything, time to do the required researches to get the right gear ans wires.

It may be a good fit for my application after all. Do you know if it's easily removable? At first I wanted the amplifier to be attached to the box but I can find another place to put it.

there's a tab that tucks under the weather stripping.
Lift weather stripping up 2 in inches, slide box out, disconnect wires, done.
It's literally a 2 minute job.

It may be a dumb question but in terms of sound quality, which is better between having a single box like this on the right with the speaker facing the left of the car versus a box behind the left rear seat with the subwoofer facing back as I intended initially?

it would seem the ideal solution would be facing rear and close to the taillights.
however, life is full of compromises so you could go that route but lose trunk space
or keep them close to the taillights on the right side and get back trunk space while still having good placement.
I think with quality components and properly powered, you'll have good sounding bass either way.
