Hey guys I'm going to purchase this transponder
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2005-...Q5fAccessories
But in the link it states that I need to use a scan tool, or a programming computer to make it work, are they just talking crap? Or do I really need to bite the big one and have the dealer connect it?. I know how to program it; but I just want to make sure that this key fob is ok
it is a KPU41788, which works for my remote KPU41805

The key has 2 different types of programming.
1. For the transponder, unlock doors, trunk etc.
2. This one, the key itself to turn the ignition, unless you already have 2 keys programmed and this is going to be your 3rd, you HAVE to go to the dealership and pay.

Just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. I bought one from Ebay and it programmed with no problem. As long as you have 2 working key programming is very easy. My problem was getting the key cut. I went to 3 different places until I could convince the guy that I know what I am doing.
The seller I bought my key from is remotez4less.
BTW if programming goes wrong or cutting the key goes wrong you can buy just the key blade and replace it.

What is the model #, FCC ID #, IC # on the remote? That ebay seller doesn't provide any of that information in his ad. 2004 RX8's will only work with a specific switchblade model.

That's why I put the sellers name cause the one I got from him worked for me with no problem. Also the reason I chose him was it was the cheapest on Ebay that accepts 7 days money back based on their ad. Even if you cut the key and find out it is not working you can buy one of these blank blades for around 7 bucks and return it or sell it on Ebay. Here is a link of one of these blank blades: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Blank...Q5fAccessories

ok i need help, i read this thread but i think i am misunderstanding. I have a 2004 rx8 and both of my keyless remotes are dead. They are the old ones with an FCC ID: KPU41805.
Question 1: If i get an uncut switchblade remote from ebay with a different FCC ID, will it still work with my 2004 rx8?
Question 2: After looking at ebay, all of the switchblade remotes say they only work for 2005+, if i purchase one of these switchblades remotes with an uncut key, will it still program with my 2004 rx8?

Some people say some of the keys on Ebay would not work with 04 cars. IMHO I think there is no reason it shouldn't work but to be safe buy it from a seller that have a refund policy just in case it is not working for you. Before cutting the key program the remote part, if it works then cut it otherwise return it.
If you look couple of posts above I put the info of the seller that I bought mine from. I just bought mine a month ago and they have refund policy.
BTW You can program the remote part yourself. You need to have 2 working keys in order to program the immobilizer part yourself otherwise you should go to dealer. Lastly the hardest part for me was convincing the guy at Lows to cut the key and I know it will work.

Take a few minutes and read the whole thread...
I have an 04 RX8 too. MY remote had the same KPU as yours, KPU41805. I bought the switch blade one from Ebay with different FCC ID: KPU41788 and it worked with no problem on my car.

I ordered my key today, only problem I have is that I have only 1 key so I won't be able to program the key myself and the dealer wants to charge me $150 to do it, does anyone know of any other place to get it programmed I live in Dallas. Please help I don't want to have to pay that much for something that can be easily done.
