Upgrade stereo for movies, mp3, etc

I just purchased my RX-8, fully loaded with the GT package, nav system...the works. I am reading a lot about getting movies to play on the nav screen and other upgrades that can be done to the 8. I particularly like the idea of being able to play movies. I was thinking that there must be a way that you could hook up a computer system that has a hard drive for mp3's, a dvd drive, and any other drives that you would want to connect. I'm thinking it could be like a mini-laptop, you could have visuals for music (like in Winamp) and all that good stuff. I have done some stereo install in the past but never on anything as nice as the 8.

I know that there are converters that can be hardwired into the system. Does anyone know the most recent, well trusted one out there, or if one is coming that will be more convenient/reliable?

Another question is if anyone knows of a NICE car stereo install place that could do some work in the Northeast.

Thanks to everyone in advance for the advice

where in the north east? i know there are some places on longisland, new york that do the stereo systems for all the "pimpin escalizzades and da fly taHOE" and they do some amasing work; assuming you trust your new baby to a stereo shop.

My first impulse is to do the work myself unless it's really tough stuff. I just need to know the in's and out's before I start. i really wanted to talk to some pros to see wht they thought was feasible. You know, bounce some ideas off them. If the price was right, I would just let them do it I guess, but most of those places are expensive.

I'm looking more around the Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont region to get some work done. New York might be a bit of a haul, but if the place there is good it might be worth it. Do you know a website or some contact info for those places

Been there....done that... HAHA...check out my thread.

I'm having work done exactly like what you might be wanting (though way, way more in depth than what you are looking for)

Check out my daily pictures at:

Hope that helps!

Devoid,

Now, did you say that this work was all done by someone else, or did you do some/all of it yourself? I did to my last car what you did to this 8. I gutted the whole thing, dynamatted it, integrated subs and three amps in the trunk, put in components.....the whole thing. I was just afraid of doing it to such a nice car this time.

If you did do the work yourself (or even if you watched others do it) How difficult was the process in general? In other words, did you run into any pitfalls that an installer such as myself should look out for?

Looks great by the way, very nicely done. How does it sound?

PaddyMurphy - It is all being done by a very trusted installer. These guys have put out award winning cars around the country, so you know they do a damn good job. As for being able to do it yourself...it depends how in depth you want to go. They are still working on mine. I could do a lot of things, but I prefer to let the pros do it because this is such an awesome car to begin with, and so new. (I don't own it yet...ordered in April, built in June, delivered in July, trasported to audio shop. I'm completing financials this saturday (I hope..))

It is designed to be the best sounding it could possibly be. I would be alright doing most of the work...gutting the interior, dynomat, etc. I have actually been working along side the shop guys when I get the opportunity. Where I really wanted to leave it to the pros was in the fabrication of the sub box and the new custom dash to replace the radio. Because of the design of the radio...that is where the most difficult work come in.

Hope that answers your questions...

You make a good point, I guess it is good to leave to the pros in some areas. You said these guys are located in the Northeast? Could I get their name or some contact info, I'd really like to talk with them a bit. If you don't mind me asking, too, around what price range did this end up being?

Be sure to post those pics when she's all done. Are you planning on showing the car or competing?

Well..the plan is for the car to simply be mine. I'm sure it's already making a name for itself, and me making a name for myself in having designed the entire thing from scratch. (I left the shop to the little details such as wiring, but I drew scetches for the entire design, and did all the research for what parts would work) Beyond that, I do plan to show the car...but don't really care if I compete or not. If people want me to, I will, and if someone wants to sponsor, that's up to them...let me tell you, I don't see JL audio, Alpine, etc. doing me any favors at the moment, so they'd really have to entice me into being sponsors. (I can be bought...its just a high price )

Yes...these guys are in the northeast...but its Cleveland, Ohio. They are Auto Sound and Security. Their number is 440-951-1440. Feel free to drop "the RX-8 owner" when talking to them and use me as a reference. It will benefit you...

And I don't mind you asking about the price range...but I prefer not knowing at this point. There are so many purchased parts done by me, and then others done by the shop, and then the work done by the shop...I honestly don't want to add it all up...its a lot.
