Upgrading non bose standard speakers.. worth it?

O.k I don't have the money to do a REAL upgrade, haha, meaning amps and all but I would like to improv sound quality in my *. I have the base model system, would I get any noticable benefit from replacing the front door speakers? the front and back ? If so what size and brand would you all suggestion? I Would like to stay under 150-200 bucks for the speakers.. hmmm think its possible? reasonable? Worth it?

ya, I think upgrading the speakers is a good idea. I upgraded my pseakers in the front and they sound alot better. replacing the rears will give dome more bass. go onto to ebay and u should be able to get four speakers for 200

but then, you should get a good amp or a good cross over. The mids and highs still end up getting mixed up >.<

Do it. Replace both front and rear. Stock speakers are junk. For non-Bose system, fronts are 6X8, rears are 6X9.

I just replaced all 4 speakers on my car a couple weeks ago. I decided to give Kicker KS series coaxial a try based on good reviews I've read. I love them. The stock head unit drives these speakers just fine. I left the stock tweeters as is for now. Bass is decent, but if you want lots of bass, add amp and subs.

hey man, would you suggest 2 way? 3 way?

Thanks for the info! I am not heavy on the money so this will be step one in a long drawn out upgrade ... amp ... way down the line : )

I just replaced my rear speakers with Infinity Kappa 6x9 3-ways and the front with Infinity Reference 6x9 2-ways. The quality inprovement is remarkable and it is a pretty easy DIY. (Unlike the OEM speakers, the rear deck has to be mounted from underneath in the trunk). The Infinitys are more efficient than the stock speakers, so the OEM headunit powers them satisfactorily. Those speakers might be a little more pricey than you are looking for, but I am sure there are others that will still be a long-sight better than stock. The bass response is improved, but not as strong as I would like -- thinking of an Infinity Basslink next to fill out the bottom end.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, I also installed Dynamat on the rear deck, behind the rear seat, on the rear wheel wells that protrude into the cabin and and on the front door speaker enclosures -- that made a noticable difference in both the fidelity and the bass response.

I've got an ancient thread about this somewhere...search for 150, it was in the title as it was the amount I spent for a significant improvement over stock. Basically, I bought Infinity Reference 6.5" components for the doors and Infinity Reference 3-way 6x9s for the rears. You can find them very cheap on Ebay...just choose your seller carefully, and make sure they guarantee that their stuff works. My first set of fronts had one blown tweeter, but the seller replaced it, no problem. This made a simply AMAZING difference. Sure, adding a sub will also make a huge difference, and adding a better amp will make a somewhat smaller but still worthwhile difference...but if you're looking for an immediate and inexpensive impact for the better, do your fronts and rears. Its not even that difficult to do yourself.

Oh yeah, and don't listen to anything I said in my thread about speaker wire polarity...I didn't know what I was talking about. :o The correct info has been posted in numerous spots since then.

Yes--upgrade the factory speakers. I changed all of mine out before completing the system with amp and sub--aftermarket speakers off the factory head unit does wonders for the sound of the base system.

Done

Infinity reference in the front and rear - 3 way in the back and front - and the Infinity Basslink I patched off the rear speakers. I got circuit city to do the install, about 100 bucks .. for the work but I got a pretty clean job, Wires were soderd and all that good stuff... For those of you who have the baselink where did you put the remote?

135 for rear speakers
87 for fronts
256 for basslink

then install fees, wires, extended warrenty on the basslink, cost me about 700 total... to be honest it was somewhat of a spontaneous decision to get it done, but the system sounds 150% better

Very good--I have Infinity Kappa Components in the front, Infinity Reference in the back and an Infinity Kappa Perfect 10" sub powered by an Alpine 5 channel amp.
