Voooooodoo shift knob..

Voooooodoo shift ****..
So today I get up, and grabbed my dead miata's shift ****, a powdercoated, regular-size (1.85 inch diameter) Voodoo shift ****, and swap the stock piece out..
Fits allright. Fits so allright that there is no change from the Miata orientation to the RX! (which means, those of you with engraved Voodoos from a miata, it'll line up precisely in the 8..)
It's a bit shorter and lighter, and has no nylon bushing. It's a direct screw-in, no setscrew or other garbage.
Result: I used to think the Miata had the best gearbox in town.. well, the 8's is just as sweet, and even a little bit better.. a little less notchier, the throw's about the same.
Amazing to realize just how much the stock piece "deadens" the feel of the gearbox. The Voodoo connects you *directly* to the gearbox. You feel it. You *know* what you're doing, because you feel it clearly.
This is my first time driving a wankel motor with a machined metal **** screwed directly on the shifter.. I swear.. you feel every power pulse, plus you feel the teeth in the rotor and eccentric gearing :D
The stock piece ain't NEVER going back on. I'm getting a new 1.85 inch spun aluminum Voodoo, and I'm gonna have The Knobmeister put a detailed rotor in the middle, complete with apex seals and gear, and the shift pattern will be in Roman numbers.. I, II, III, IV, V, VI, R, with an arrow right and down for the R. The R itself, of course, will be a Roman font.
Why all the Latin crap? 'Cause as Japanese as Mazda is, there's always been something vaguely Italianesque about the Mazda styling and driving feel.. :D
For those on the fence, do it. It makes the gear feel like a precision-machined piece, like a fine rifle bolt.. it makes for quicker, smoother, more positive gear changes with far less effort.
IOTW, it does in the 8 exactly what it did in the Miata.
