What is this thing?

actually, it looks like one of those cheap security key systems for cars. the obd connector is on the left hand side of the steering wheel, at least on lhd models, and is tucked up under the dash.

yeah, you're right. the odb connector is connected to the bottom of the steering wheel area by a silver bracket. It's facing downwards. My LCD monitor is fading, and I can't see dark pictures very well. On second look this is a long black wire with a connector.
I have no idea what it is.

Ok, I took a much closer look at it and am even more confused. This little black box has 2 wires coming out of it and appears to be wired in series with the clutch depression sensor.
It certainly does not look factory installed.....

Finally talked to the dealer. That thing is, as said by lurch519, a cheap anti-theft device. Dealer claims they install them on all the cars on the lot and then if it is not purchased they just "disable" it with a blank.
As I said above, the device is clearly just wired in to "act" like the clutch is not pressed, thus preventing the car from starting. I'm not a car thief, but could disable this thing in less than 1 minute with wire cutters and a wing nut. It seems pretty silly to me.
The dealer did manage to try to sell me the device for $299 - "but we might could let you have it as a special customer for $150." Grrrrr.... I could make one of these for less than $5 with parts from Radio Shack.
Now I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem right that they drill into an interior panel and cut into the factory wiring harness on my car to add an aftermarket device that I have no desire to have. Especially without telling me they have done so.
Now I have to decide what to do about it all. When I asked him about removing it he said they could do it, but they'd leave the holes.

I would make them fix the holes just for being dumb asses for trying to sell it to you for $150. You didn't even want the crap in the first place and your left with holes that you were not aware of at purchase?
