where did you mount your I/R recever?

anyone got a good way to mount a I/R here..I drilled a small hole and mounted it to the back but i really want a 1/2 inch square hole with some smoked plastic covering the hole. Any ideas ?

I think my dvd player remote has some "smoked plastic covering the hole" where the IR is sent. You might be able to find a remote that uses this, and do a really good cutting job. It won't look stock, but it will be better than an empty hole.

I'd think about putting it somewhere else close to there, though. Or try to procure something r/f based...

Trussville Mazda used to sell the trim panel seperatly for any modules, but they stopped. I was going to suggest getting one of those and modifying it, that way you wouldn't have to actually do any cutting, just replacing. But you'll have to find one of those now...

If they couldn't, the parts counter wouldn't be worth a crap. Just go ask for the casset or mini disc trim for the rx-8. If they don't know what you mean, try to explain it. If they still don't get it, call / e-mail trussville mazda. They are pretty smart folks... good at understanding english and doing intuitive tasks

They should still be able to sell the part seperate since they sold it seperate before.

Unforunately using that panel for my IR receiver is out of the question since I have wood dash "paneling" installed there.

My other idea is that there is a "window" on the nav screen that looks like it's made to pass IR. Probably for the JDM TV option.

What I need to know is how to get into the pop-up screen assembly without messing it up so that I can see if I can mount the IR "eye" there.

Anybody know how to do this?

Are you sure about that? I ask because it doesn't do anything at all when I shine a very bright light into it or block the light altogether. Also the window looks like the typical IR filter (88A or similar).

Does anyone know how to get behing that window without tearing up the car?

That would be sensible except that the screen display changes from day to night mode when you turn on the lights -- night or day. At least mine does.

Even if it is a place where you can place a sensor, remember that it won't be available when the screen is down.

Which makes it an ideal place to mount the sensor for a DVD player remote. You can't see the video when the screen is down anyway.

If it's for a video source, then of course. If it's for something else, then you have to consider it. That's all.
