where to put subs?

i am thinking about taking out my back seats and putting a wall of subs/amps. is this a bad idea for sound quality for my subs? usually they are in the trunk which i beleive is for the maximum length for the sound waves to travel.

any thoughts?

If you were willing to sacrafice that much space, it should come out to be a very beautiful setup.

One thing I would consider is putting the subs facing out where the back of the backseats are now(so, facing the cabin, flush with the current seatbacks), and doing some really nice fiberglass work where the subs port out where the passthru is right now.

Drool........, I can only imagine how hard 2 jl 13w7s running on 3 jl 1000/1 amps ported would hit.

hah, well i dont want quite that much power...my hearing is already a little gone from past setups!

i am thinking about a jl 500/1 either powering 3 jl 10's or 2 jl 12's...but i cant decide which or what series i want to get. i use to have 2 12' w3d2 and they sounded good, but i want something punchier so i might go with 10's.

whatcha think?

I think that they should go in the trunk where they will fit properly and securely. Next I would limit the # of subs to two and choose the subs around the box. Choose all the subs in the world that you want but if the box does not fit in the space, don't expect good results. I would consider a Audio Control Epicenter, a good pair of 10's in sealed boxes (I will recommedn the Eclipse Aluminums as they are highly predictable) and I would recommend more power if you have it. Failing the more power issue, I would drop to a lower level of 10's and get them into a proper ported enclosure. The RX8's can sound great if you do it right.

forbidden, i have my heart set on removing the rear seats for a nice looking set up. my only concern is i will lose sound quality doing so. if that is the case then i will rethink it.

does anyone know if this will cause a loss of quality or power?

Long story short: Pratically in this example, you shouldn't really lose anything.

Best sound quality is achieved when you have a straight line of sight to the speaker itself, but then again, there are many other factors to consider(object resonance and so forth), none of which really make a difference in the grand scheme of things if you merely plan on doing this for a personal enjoyment stance.

if you are only thinking about 2 subs i dont see why you want to sacrifce the back seats for that?

My personal opinion is that if you want the best sound quality, fire the woofers into the actual compartment you are in. It never made sense to me to fire subs into the trunk and I even competed and worked for several stereo shops for several years. I wouldn't place my home sub in the next room and expect the best sound so why would I do it in the car? Fortunately cars and sound waves can do very weird things and alot of options can sound good.

hah, yeh you'd think that, but...

1) i hate having the extra weight of more people in my car. this makes it so if a third person asks for a ride it is not an option.

2) i'll put the amps there too...i might go for a third sub, not sure i havent really thought it out yet (just wanted to make sure it was a possibility without sacrificing sound.

3) if i am going to be putting some more weight in the car (subs & amps), id like to take some weight out.

I would go for 2 jl 10w6s on a 1000/1

If your gonna be putting this much effort into it, might as well go all the way and even shell out for 2 10w7s, all the sub u will ever need, and more.

IT just gave me a vision of speaker seats, like formed reinforced metal mesh seats with the speaker matrix visible behind the mesh. They wouldn't be all that comfortable, but you could get other people in the car when it came down to it.

I don't know, I think 500 watts should be plenty. I'm not into competitions or anything, just good sounding loud music. I am not sure my ears can handle 1000 watts after the abuse i have given them over the years!

If I go with the 500/1, I think 2 w6s or w7s would be under powered. I would have to go with one, which would look funny.

According to the jl website 3 of the new 10' w1s would be a great fit for 500 watts OR 2 10' w3s.

Hi guys,

Here is an example on the photo. It's not my car. I have a Kicker S10L7 Solo-Baric in a ported carbon fiber-MDF combined box ( lightweight and rigid). It is behind the rear seats. I take off the plastic cover from the back of the seats to avoid it's vibration.

You find the pictures of my car's audio, in another topic on this forum. (interior,audio/ pictures of the door Bose speakers)
