Would this work for an Aux In?
I'm planning on adding an external amp to the Bose system. In the meanwhile, I found an inexpensive equalizer/preamp with an RCA in for a CD player. If I hook up my iPod to the RCA in jack and hook the equalizer to the amp I install, would this work, and give me a better sound pathway rather than going through an FM modulator?

In case you're wondering, the installation works great, I have it up and running in my SUV to test out. Sound quality is great.
Thanks again, when overload gets his final product up and going, I'll probably switch out for that.

It's a Legacy LEQ-12A equalizer/preamp

I haven't hooked it up to the BOSE yet, since my car is in the shop, but I hooked it up direct to my Pioneer amp which powers 2 rears and a sub in my SUV and it sounds fine - I haven't used a direct wired FM modulater, just a wireless one, and the Eq/PA works much much better. I hope hooking it into the Bose will go smoothly...
PS I got it off EBAY from a vendor (not an auction, so it is still listed) for around $40

Yeah, it probably would work. Just make sure that you wire up the channels cleanly.
It looks like it could handle the differential output from the head unit, but I don't know how easily it would handle a seconday line-in source. If you wired a bypass for another line-in it would probably be switchable, however you would have to slice and splice the wires between the HU and the bose amp (Which not everyone has), in order to make it work, and then you wouldn't be able to control the volume with the head unit or effect any changes with the HU, as it would be effectively out of the picture from the amp at that point.
The EQ part is nice, as well as the extra set of outputs, making this a better choice for people who want to replace the bose amp with a different aftermaket one.
If you just want a clean line-in, you can do so with just the tape module, by wiring in directly to the line-outputs as ectomort pointed out in my original tape-deck hack https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-how-add-aux-tape-module-10530/#post297232 towards the middle of the page. You still need a tape in the module, but it works cleanly, you just need to be careful not to overdrive the head-unit's line in. The pinouts are listed in ectomorts links.
What I'm working on encompasses getting a clean line in that integrates many other functions, such as remote control mp3 device features and multiple line-in devices.
