I zoom therefore I am.
Update:
I've had zero issues with my unit since install. Great sound and flawless steering wheel control.
I've left the Ipod in my glove box. Partly because finding a mini din 8 pin extender is harder then finding [insert your hard to find item here], partly because I've just grown use to having it there.

Other Solutions, maybe....
Not to bag on the RPM.com guy, but I was wondering if anyone had heard of or used the Neo iOn-1 iPod found on www.mp3yourcar.com ? I seems to embody the same principals as the iceLink Ipod interface by Dension, but cheaper and probably more refined. It simply plugs in the back of the unit and viola`. Also I found a aftermarket bluetooth receiver @ Bestbuy and after speaking to a service Rep at my Dealership, found out that if your not using your SAT port or TAPE/MD port, in THEORY could get ahold of the appropriate plug for that port (from your parts department) and splice the LEFT/RIGHT audio wires to the Bluetooth receiver and thusly have your phone hardwired to your stereo. Anybody else find a Bluetooth speakerphone solution?

Also, the theory you mentioned for auxiliary input would not work. The head unit communicates with any modular devices attached to it via a proprietary bus, so any device plugged in must be able to recognize the communication and respond properly. If it were that simple, there would be a lot more cheap auxiliary options for the RX-8.

I have to give a big thanks to Donny and the RPM Store, after having my AudioLink for almost a year (and having no problems with it) it started developing a short in the wire just before the connection to the iPod. I would get sound out of just one side of the car and would have to wiggle the cable a bit to get sound from both sides. I assumed this would be considered a normal wear and tear issue as this is common with headphones and other corded electronics. I inquired about purchasing a new AudioLink and Donny offered to replace mine free of charge! The RPM Store really takes care of their customers. Highly recomended!

I just got my Audiolink and am very happy with it. Couldn't think of a better solution. I seem to be getting a very small amount of noise (interference? Gain control?) but I consider myself to be very sensitive to audio quality and this is hardly noticeable. Certainly exponentially better than a tape adapter or <shudder) FM transmitter. For some reason, it seems to sound better than the CD player, which is unexpected. The audio is outstanding and the head unit controls work great. I'd give the product a 9 out of 10. Money well spent.
It was already answered buy the supplier but 'yes', the Audiolink has a 1/8" 'headphone' jack. So any player will work with it. I haven't compared the sound quality of the 1/8 with the base adapter yet. I will check tonight to see if there is a difference. I would imagine the radio controls only work with the iPod, except for volume which should be universal.

great product... but i want to ask about a "possible" mod (i say "possible" because i don't even know if it can be done). I know there are some people out there that know a lot about ipod's and thier connection ports... i am not one of them... this idea just came to me, it may have even been posted already idk. is there a way to have the song info, playlist etc. sent out to a different scrolling LCD source?? instead of trying to have it on the stock head unit... and still have the audio sent to the radio?? That way the music plays and you can see what the file name is... Maybe this is more of a question for an Ipod forum board... but comments are welcome

I posted here earlier because I managed to blow the audiolink and then fix it myself (too much current draw from a USB hard disk). Anyway the first time something rattled inside and it was a loose cap I soldered back on. The loose cap didn't do much that time around, but this time I'm stuffed.
I started losing volume while driving, especially the low end but found pushind down the on the plastic a little popped the volume back up again. It started happening too much so took it appart again and pushed on the circuit board in different places to see where the problem could be but couldn't for the life of me work it out. Just as I was about to put it back together I tilted it and just barely noticed another tiny surface mount component (near the main IC) fall off.. this time between the carpet and handbrake... so goodbye mp3 audiolink.
I've stuffed around with it too much to get a warranty replacement so I'm going to order another (unless I can find something equivalent). I'm too used to having lots of different continuous music on tap not to have anything installed. The only really really annoying bit is the lack of fast forward and rewind (I like to listen to hour+ long mix sets).
It doesn't look like I'm the only one suffering with badly soldered components, I've received a private message from someone that had the same happen to them. It would be nice to get at least a shake/rattle test before mailing the thing out.

We do spot check them, but due to the large quantity of orders, we can't check every one. However, if you do have a problem, just let us know right away and we'll definitely work with you to resolve it.
