20B swap

20B swap
Hey everyone, I know there have been many threads about it but really now it's not really expensive nor that hard. I'm really contemplating it 'cause nothing is for sure for the renesis engine(turbos and superchargers) and how much they really can be pushed. So I broke it down like this. 20b engine-4,000euros, Rx7 tranny, rear differential, custom made shaft. Ecu-haltech, turbo(basically anything) new turbo manifold, intercooler-radiator, and some minor donor parts from an rx7. Now mounting the engine would not be hard at all, seeing that the renesis has side mounts which also bolts up right to the 20b(If you don't know what I"m talking about you could look at acosta's car on their page. Tearing the engine down would be a must for seals and porting. That's basically it, so what's the big fuss that people would be charging 35k+? Don't get me wrong I use to have and fd and have made quite a few single turbos and engine rebuilds in fd's, so I do know what I'm talking about and very mechanically inclined. So, does anyone have anything to add or discuss?

go for it! I just order and rx-8 and is a auto if the engine goes bad I have a 20b in my garage wating for a host, if it's not that hart I'll go for it too.
the most expensive thing in a swap like this is the labor, if you do it yourself is not that expensive.

IIRC, in the US it's not emissions-legal to have put an old engine in a new car (ie engine built in 1998 for the FD and installed in an RX-8). You could put the Renesis in the FD no problem, but not the other way around.
Those of you who don't have to worry about US laws (or emissions testing ) - I say go for it

Asmoran, unless the laws have changed (and they could have). My understanding of the rule is the emissions are either based on the body or the engine... So if the engine is 1998 engine, then you MUST meet 1998 emissions standards. (This could also be something that varies from state to state.)
When I was in highschool (mid '90s) a lot of folks were getting old Chevy blocks and putting them in newer vehicles.. they were emissions exempt because the block was older then 1975.

read up here for info on engine swaps and legality.

Points to remember
- Federal law prohibits tampering with emission control systems or other systems reconfiguration that might degrade the effectiveness of emission controls.
- Engine switches are acceptable as long as the resulting vehicle matches exactly to any "certified" configuration of the same or newer make and model year as the chassis.
