I did the LW Flywheel because I was having my transmission rebuilt, so there was very little additional installation cost. It was my first mod and it was worth it. Sorry, blamerobb, but there is very little gain to using headers w/o having the Cobb and optimizing the rest of the exhaust system. Cobb + tune + headers would put you over the $900. Cobb + tune from MM is $525-550? (he just changed his price).

It's okay, we've got an awesome community here to help you with your tuning needs. Most experienced rotary owners will be glad to help you along the path of righteousness.
We fear most what we do not understand, so take a while, troll the forums, and learn what you can about the COBB AP and it's capabilities. Once you become familer with it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it! (Even though I can't afford one yet!)
That's my $0.02

Cobb AP with a MazdaManiac tune hands down.
A lightweight flywheel spools up more quickly, but also falls off more quickly (inertia thing; you can't have it both ways).
As cited: $340 RB Dual RES + COBB AP $598 =$940 +15 hp [disclaimer: track only of course as a non-Cat midpipe is not emissions legal on the street]

We like to consider the Cobb AP from MazdaManiac and the BHR Ignition System a great combo and the best first two mods one can do to their RX-8 because they each address reliability issues as well as delivering enhancements in all-around driveability and, when used together, the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.
After this, a lightweight flywheel is nice and to drive with OEM-like smoothness requires a slightly different finesse but it is totally "do-able".
Last would be a catless or performance-catted midpipe.

While I agree that the BHR coils and flywheel are a nice upgrade, the OP is looking for the best performance mods for ~$900.
And while I'm asking a possible "touchy" subject... have you actually seen performance gains when the BHR coils are combined with the AccessPORT, and if so, how much (NA or FI).
Now I have a feeling you're going to say the BHR coils will deliver a reliable, consistent ignition so you essentially won't loose performance through weak ignition and that is where you "gain" performance.
But have you seen the probability for "extra" performance with your coils through tuning?

^ I agree Jon. I would classify the BHR ignition system as a component that "assures reliable performance."
I didn't prior cite this upgrade as I know BHR doesn't market it as a performance component per se.
I would (and did) get the CobbAP and BHR Ignition before a lightweight flywheel.
An RP SuperCat (High Flow Cat) is another good consideration. Better performance and still street legalemissions , but you'll be blowing your $900 cap. Actually, you may as well get used to blowing your mod budget on this machine.

id suggest the srmotorsports midpipe with cat my rpsupercat didnt last a week before the heatshield welds let go then the cat melted (of corse i was madly procharged) however the srmotorsports was solid

i like their stuff here:
http://www.shaneracing.com/RX8_Packages.html
for instance, the intake does not suck hot air (hks **cough**) , nor does it suck water (AEM **cough**)
their stuff is sensible and the package deals keep the costs down. i'm saving up 2k for the whole tamale.

^ I agree
Nitrous has the best bang for the buck on a rx8.
the rx8 makes around 170 whp stock......
Ive seen people put Intake, Catback Exhaust, Midpipe, Pulleys, Coils, Flywheel, Exedy Clutch Kit, Cobb AccessPort. And they only made 189......190whp..... Not worth it in my opinion.
I dont want to burst your bubble,
but as a fellow rotary owner and friend to plenty of 8 owners (hopefully future 8 owner)..... i would save your money untill your ready to go turbo or something....
you can get parts that will work with a turbo... like exhaust.....pulleys if you want..... but to get all that other stuff its not worth it for the money.... Especially if your looking to go fast
