Not always, you can get some really good effieciency ratings on Roots and Lysholm screw type blowers now. I've seen claims of ~70% now from Eaton and others, albeit with an intercooler, which is pretty damn good.
If they used a centrifugal blower thay may as well have used a turbo. Same boost patern but better efficiency and no parasitic loss.

Well the ECU tuning of it is for the JDM car, not the USDM car. Same goes for the Trust Turbo kit. Better off to wait until the makers are ready to do a US release than to get one now and re-invent the wheel with having to retune the damn thing...

J-spec turbo???? what the hell are you talking about a turbo is a turbo any turbo can det. a motor if not properly tuned! all this j-spec us-spec crap makes me laugh.........who buys a turbo, peals the plastic off of it and goes straight to the track. a car that comes n/a not only needs a good stand-alone but a good shop to install and tweak! it sounds like everyone is waiting for some magical kit that you only need to buy and never have to work on...... maybe we can just ask santa to install it too:D

Who says you need stand-alone EMS for FI'ing an N/A car? Many turbo kits utilize piggyback controllers to keep the auxiliary functions of the stock PCM. However, this may not be the case if you plan on running very high boost. My guess is you're exceeding what the OEM computer can do, and a stand-alone offers the most flexibility in tuning. However, you might have to compromise some of the auxiliary functions that may be present within the stock computer.
Sorry if I deviated from the topic. :o
Anyway, I've never seen a Roots or twin-screw compressor that looks like that. Is it mounted sideways or something? It's hard to tell. I wonder what the average power gain on this car is.

I would be pleasantly surprised if it was $5K. The unit they have for the Celica GT-S has a retail price of $6K-$6.5K, and a street price of $5K. If it could give me 60 hp & 50 lb.-ft. of torque reliably for $5K I would definitely consider it.
