Running through the gears . You can see afrs staying within the preset min and max lines (yellow)
Boost is staying nice and flat around 15psi in 2nd and third .
Need to see if i can get RPM hooked up .. that would be really cool !

Bad news ..............

Coming home after doing some in gear logs the other day I accelerated out of a corner and straight away heard this horrible rattling noise (not detonation).

Engine was toast so I pulled it out only to find turbo was gone as well .

Just had the engine dismantled last night and found part of the siamese sleeve had been ingested by the engine and spat out into the turbo .

Pretty gutted about it all I have to say .

Was able to see how the E&J solid corner seals were going after only about 2000kms . Not good I'm afraid . They were already starting to dig into the exhaust port land and making a wear mark all around the iron.
The apex seal wear doesn't look great either . This engine wasn't going to last very long even if the siamese hadn't fallen to bits.
Suspect the E50 played a hand in both seal issues but I know with the RX8 corner seals and ALS apexs I definitely didn't see wear like this.

slash128 11-21-2016 06:20 PM

Ugh, that is not good news on any front :( sorry to hear friend...

Regarding the seals I might have to get a scope to look inside my engine. I am still putting out good power and pulling good vac, and I'm now 4000 miles (near 6500km) in on my motor...

slash128 11-21-2016 06:22 PM

Can you post some pics of the seal wear? Once you are done grieving? SFYL...

dannobre 11-21-2016 06:35 PM

That sucks :( always hate to hear stuff like that.

I feel your pain though..I think I'm at a 6 pack of engines in mine now.....give or take

Took a few days but i've finished grieving Slash . Onwards and upwards !

The only plate I have is the middle one which is showing much less wear than the two outers .
Hard to see here but there def is a lot of wear from the very short engine life.

Hard lesson learned. Sorry man.

sinkas 11-21-2016 07:15 PM

Sorry to see,
I dont understand how the siamese thing ended up in the engine ? fluctuating back pressure between turbo and engine?

I think it was because of the bridgeport .......... it happened after i was coasting then accelerated . So there would have been exhaust gas sucked into the chamber as i was coasting . Unlucky that it chose to break off at that exact point i guess :(

slash128 11-21-2016 08:08 PM

Interesting... I will see if I can get a scope and peek inside mine... Any issues with the apex seals or just the solid corners?

9krpmrx8 11-21-2016 08:16 PM

You know what is odd, I won't mention any names but I know of two boosted engines that died a premature death after only a few thousand miles and both owners told me theirs died after coasting and then accelerating mildly. Not at WOT which is when one would assume an engine would go. Both were also running aftermarket apex seals and corner seals. I know lugging a turbocharged engine is not healthy but I wonder if there is something about these few that correlates or if it is just a coincidence.

slash128 11-21-2016 08:24 PM

Forgive me if I am misreading the photos but it seems a lot of the wear is not in the corner seal path? Not trying to dispute, just want to make sure I am tracking with what you are looking at... Can you post pics of the corner seals themselves? What was your oiling like?

Brettus 11-21-2016 10:47 PM

Here ya go

Cool, thx. What do the faces of the seals themselves look like? I ordered a USB borescope. It will be interesting g to take a peek inside mine...

Brettus 11-21-2016 11:38 PM

Dunno if that will show you a lot seeing as the ports are on the other side ...........

Corner seal faces are worn ..............

yomomspimp06 11-22-2016 12:24 AM

would be nice to see what your bridge looked like...
No bridge on the next motor, right?

Was curious if the corner seal faces showed similar wear or not.

the bridge was fine actually..No next engine wont have one

slash128 11-22-2016 08:38 AM

Well I ordered a cheap USB borescope from Amazon but if the only wear areas are over the ports as you indicated with the arrows I won't be able to scope that area without some major surgery. I'll still peek in the spark plug side out of curiosity...

Would be interested to know how the housings are looking . Running on straight petrol you should be ok . Cross fingers!

Mine was totally due to the siamese falling apart . I have to say I've been battling that shitty little part for years now and can't seem to get on top of it . Perhaps I have to bite the bullet and buy a new center plate so it at least lasts a reasonable time .

Crossing fingers indeed :) What do your housing look like? Any apex seal wear? I've only seen discussion about corner seals and side plates so far, unless I missed it.

Housings look like they are in the early stages of being raped ......

Was going to ask for pics but that seems crude given the description

I'm wondering how much is due foreign body ingestion. I'll post when I get some pics with the scope.

E&J does not make rx8 corner seals

I am Edgar Perez owner of E&J. we are sorry for your damages but we do not make corner seal for the rx8. we make rx8 apex seals and i will assure you our seals do not damage housing. please let us know how you came to the conclusion and the claim that those were out corners? We only make corner seals for 13b and 20b and no renesis rx8. we appriciate if you correct the comment of a product we dont manufacture.
now, in the case that someone machined the rotor to fit a 13b corner to the renesis, then i would suggest to measure and check the machined tolerances because we tested our 13b corners for one year before we sold one and found no such damages. we have street cars on gasoline and race cars on 50+ psi of boost, 400hp nitrous 13b running our corners and in the last year all we have are happy customers. please if you have any questions or concern feel free to contact us. our goal is to offer the best service as possible and we stand by our product.
thank you
Edgar Perez

if you have any queations our email is enjauto@bellsouth.net please feel free to email us.
