Bschwemer's Custom Turbo Build

Tony says, RX8s are GREAT
Last two have been blown coolant seals. The first was from sudden overheating on the track (Firebird West last May) from loss of coolant through a blown hose. No cloud, no warning and nearly instant 260°F engine temp. The second just un-sandwiched at the track (Arroyo Seco in New Mexico in January) after more than 90 straight minutes (and a full tank of gas) of nearly constant WOT.
I'm studding the next motor and converting to a top-mount IC to combat this issue.
The third back was something that passed through the motor (last "What Happens in Vegas meet) leaving all the seals intact, but destroyed an iron and a housing (and the turbine of the turbo). Probably a piece of debris caught in the IC or cold-side plumbing. Never found it, just the massive gouges.
I reused those apex seals since they were still in good condition.
Detonation is a tuning problem. I don't have those.

Vmounts came along for that very reason for the rotary engine. Japan racers use them for a reason. Unfortunately most other cars do not have enough engine bay room to do this.
I just dont want you to waste your time with a top mount like the turbo 2 has.

a/w intercoolers will heat soak. There are ways around that especially for track. Some actually place a ice chest in the passengers seat and dont use a heat exchanger up front. A ice chest pumped will last about 90 minutes per report.
For me that is too much dang trouble.
I do run an a/w Pettit intercooler and for the street its ok. For track it does need help and thats why I have the water methanol system.
This past w/e I was at Roebling Road In Savanna Ga. Track temp was approx 92F Humidity was at 40% (take that you desert guys! jk) and I was running too cool!
Coolant was at 185F and if i allowed intake charge temp (monitored post boost on the lim) to get below 120F i would get some intermediat misfire. At 130-140F range it seemed happy and was as smooth as silk.
I thought that was a little strange, but an old racer told me if i am running cold plugs and I overcool the intake charge temps then i could get problems.
Guess its all about balance.
MM --that really suxs that you lost engines like that. I thought I was the only one with gremblins around.

Short story is yes, it runs great. No it's not "tuned." Haven't really driven it at all.
Been super busy lately. Getting ready to move to Hawaii, So I've been packing up a bunch of stuff, getting stuff organized, and looking into having the car shipped from NC to HI. Not cheap...
With said expenses coming up, and the lack of a job once I move, I've decided to sell the kit. Jobs aren't to hard to find really, as I've already had phone interviews with a few of the Cutter dealerships in Honolulu. Not really what I want to get back into, but meh... a job is a job when you move so far away!
The turbo kit is being posted today. Once I get out to HI, I'll build another kit or buy the Pettit SC system. Hadn't really decided yet. It'll be left NA atleast until I get it registered and through emissions testing.
For now, the kit is off the car and sitting in boxes, awaiting its new owner.
Haven't read this thread in a few weeks, so I'll go back through in a bit and answer any questions(if there are any).
See you boosted folks again soon enough!

I don't want to work on cars at all, but I'm a "certified tech" (yeah I know that doesn't mean ****) and I know I can make money doing it. Hopefully I'll be able to land a job in the Marine world. I've heard good and bad things about Cutter....

I do support trial and error, that's how we find out work works and what does not.
To the OP, good luck on your move and your next project.
