Custom Turbo
#28
Ok... So anyways... Im looking for 300 rwt with the psi under 10 as its going into the motor which means the turbo will have to be pushing 11-12 psi due to the minor lack of pressure loss due to the intercooler. Does anyone know what size turbo i would need for this set-up?
You will need to run 13-14ish psi at the UIM at around 5500 rpm to make 300ft/lbs
check out the stickyed highest whp thread
That will make the car pretty much undriveable at WOT in the first 3 gears unless you get some serious rubber BTW

Ok. Thanks. And most of my drivng is highway. I live almost directly between erie and pittsburgh. And yes. I am the guy that just weded a 90 degree dump on in place or the muffler. Its not too loud. And i dd thi for more sound until i could get my cutom set-up fabbed up. Its a 75mm main to a Y which is 2.5in, and the mufflers used are cherry bomb extrmes. Theyre on of the oly mufflers that i could find that would fit that wouldnt cost as much as a "brand-name" exhaust. And ya. Im using mufflers bcause i hve recently orded an ap dr midpipe.

Why does everyone want to start a custom build without ever asking if an existing kit could potentially do what they want?
I'm not going to claim that I know a whole lot about turbos and all the kits for the 8, but I'm guessing that what he's asking for could be done with one of the existing kits and proper tuning.
Decided to do a quick look at a sticky in this thread and the OP really should try looking around a bit. I already found which turbo has shown to do almost exactly what he requested... Admittedly, most seem to reach his goal at a higher rpm though, so it's not just a bunch of kits that will fit his request, though still doesn't have to be some custom set up either. (I think)

I wanted to do a custom set-up because i was told that it would b much cheaper. thats what the guy at the tuning shop(Absolute Style&peformance) said anyways... so who knows if hes right...

if you know what you are doing ................... then yes .
Otherwise - not so much .

i have do quite a bit of research with similar goals in mind. so far the total cost i have came up with is around 5000 and that does not include support mods i have already paid for, compression test depending on your mileage im at (30k), dyno tuning, bolts, and other small thing so figure another 500-800. So you will be right up there and then you add in your time to do it if you are capable and have the welder, access to the stainless at a wholesale price, and the sources for the rest of the parts. Some make this so cut and dry, I have been looking for over a year, asking questions, reading, looking at other builds (seccussul ones) and still looking things over. If im going to do this i want it to be a one shot deal and have it be right
And thats not including all the money invested before the estimate i came up with which i don't even care to think about

As others have said its only cheaper to do custom if you can do all the work yourself. If you are paying someone else to do any of the fab work it is very unlikely it will be cheaper.
My build is probably one of, if not the cheapest custom builds on the forums here. In its current form I probably have about 3k invested in the kit itself including the Cobb AP(which I overpaid for). But I did it all by myself. All the cutting, welding, sweating and bleeding. If you dont already have the tools and arent prepared and capable of doing everything by yourself I guarantee you wont be saving any money over buying a stock greddy kit. And it is highly unlikely you'll make more power than the bigger kits(SFR, Esmeril) for less money.

when i did my figuring i based it on high end prices and not the chance of getting it new from someone or discounted through a vendor. Im sure it can be done for less i just wanted to plan on spending the most so when i have some left im even happier. where did you get all the stainless from mainly the tight radius bends for the manifold?
