Electric puller fan for intercooler???

I am pondering the idea of installing Puller fans/fans for the intercooler either wired by the ignition or by a switch.. anyone tried this before?? all in the efforts of reducing intake temps.

Combined with a Water meth injection..

A fan on your intercooler will slow down air moving through it at speed, but it may help at low speeds.

how is that possible?? please explain.

having them turn on manually when you need them or when driving spirited. also how does that fall with the radiator fans? wouldn't that also cause lower air flow? (with a puller fan pulling air out) considering your intercooler is in a horizontal position.

It's likely that no electric fan can push/pull air through your inter cooler at high speeds equivalent to driving above 50mph (just my guess.) Instead, even if the fan is turning, it creates a wind resistance path when the air wants to go through the fins at a faster rate than the fan can push or pull. This means manual would probably be favored so you have complete control of it as opposed to always on from ignition. I've got a two stage fan in another vehicle and have a three position switch... depending on the condition, I choose speed 1 or speed 2. The problem for me is I removed my engine fan so no matter what, my e-fan has to be on all the time.

In some situations where the inter-cooler is hidden this is needed. With the Greddy kit, the intercooler is front and center, a fan on it would inhibit flow thru it at speed. That said, the bigger the intercooler, the more pressure loss, bigger is not always better. I am using a water/air intercooler or save real estate.

Here is my own opinion supported by nothing more then my own thoughts and some basic fluid dynamics theroy.

If you have a FMIC without in or out ducting, a puller fan will improve air flow even at speed.

The reason is that with no ducting, the air is going to hit the intercooler, pile up a little and then go around, taking the path of least resistance. Additionaly, when the air goes around, it will negativly effect the air flow to the radiator. All in all, no ducting creates bad air flow to the interooler and radiator. Solution, ducting.

Installing a good puller fan that both moves a lot of air and has low drag will obviously improve air flow at low speeds and at high speeds it ill help pull the air through the intercooler before it moves around the intercooler. Basicly, it will keep the air moving in the right direction.

Ideally you use ducting and no fan. Or you can run ducting and a fan in a situation where the intercooler has very little frontal area. V-mount or top mount.

Ducting FTW.

I am using this Allstar rolled plastic from summit racing. Its cheep, strong, easy to cut and bend. Not 100% sure how I am going to attach it, but I am thinking 3m double sided tape.

Hmmm, that looks interesting. I have used sheet metal but aluminum is expensive and I am a rookie at fabbing.
