They are refering to power at the crank, not the wheels.

Thats the way I read it too - 212 at the crank . an exageration by Mazda of almost 40 HP !

if mazda did knowingly exaggerate it that much, thats horrible... but honestly, does it really matter?

If someone buys a car stricly based on paper figures and not the drive, screw em.

I absolutely agree. Anyone buying cars just for paper figures is missing the whole point.

However, the Renesis real output debate never ceases to amaze.

JDM models are supposed to actually have 250 Ps at the crank. Emissions issues don't seem to apply there. BUT the car, even in JDM PCM tune, is just putting out what we've seen all around in our respective markets (USA and Europe).

Don't you just love them rotaries?

I really do!

These repeated FWHP vs. WHP and US advertised power vs. ROW debates are getting really annoying. Especially when it's not on topic.

Mazda's engine power claim is actually reasonable, the transmission is really that sh-tty, that's where most of the engine power is lost, it their dirty little secret ...

The trans is straight out of China and is sourced also for the Nissan S15 Silvia ( 200 SX ) and the lexus is200
No where as good as the S6 RX7 and definitly not as strong

Our tests of engine performance have been done on an engine dyno, so the transmission doesn't come into it at all. Although out numbers where a fair bit less than what Mazda said, it was not our intention to prove or disprove those claims. The testing we did is to form the baseline for our on-going performance development of the engine, including forced induction.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Interesting.

This is the same tranny as the Miata, which only seems to suffer a 12% - 15% driveline loss in that car.

Must be the pistons...

If we accept that the engine is making 210~215 fwhp when it's actually in the car (Hymee's is making 222, but under the best possible conditions, right?), then 12%~15% drivetrain loss would give us about 180 rwhp. Which is close to what most people see on a dyno, right?

is hymee's? the best possible conditions? since there have been reports of na tunes with 211whp which would be 242ish using 15%, it would seem not.

The RX-8 transmission doesn't have any more loss than any other transmission. There's no "dirty little secret" about it.

Uh... I sure hope you don't think the RX-8 is front wheel drive...

But later on, you do say RWHP, so I guess it's okay.

how many people do you know who tested before and after rather than make assumptions?

I know at least one knowledgable source that claims a 70 hp loss in the RX-8 trans, the power loss is one of the reasons they don't last long when pushed hard; the internls can't take input/output stress differential. An RX-8 doesn't make any more torque than a Miata, yet eats transmissions at several hundred percent higher rate than it does

if the drivetrain doesn't account for the loss, then the only other dirty lil'secret is they're still lying about the power output ... which is hard to do given the new independent-verification standard ...

as for the dyno testing, the assumption that the Motec is programmed better than OE is only another assumption, not a fact

If this were true, from all the wasted heat and friction wouldn't we be warping from heat the transmission internals? I guess this is what you're indicating?

^That is true. It's not losing 70 hp right now. No reliable source would claim that.

The tranny casing says the same name as the transmissions that are used in the S2k, I think the manufacturer is Astin or something like that. You don't hear too many stories of S2k cars having alot of tranny problems and power lose, I don't think the tranny is the problem.

Bingo! I guarantee they are not losing 70 hp to the transmission. I don't know how anyone can even claim that.

its not just the tranny. that rear dif sucks quite a few horse. as well as the stock flywheel. where did 70 hp come from. the car dynos at 185 -190. thats 40-45. or 21% using 185 and 232(current advertised number) nemesis8 runs 200rwhp with a flywheel change along with several other people. call the flywheel a 1owhp benifit and now you are only talking a 30ish hp loss for the tranny and rear dif etc. is that out of the realm of physics possibilities? everyone knows how hot the tranny is from the cup warmers

dont start with the 250. htey sold the car with 247 down to 238 which = 232 under the new standard. the tested number that hymee got is within the legal allowed variance.
