i could be wrong, but that's what's worked for me in the past anyway..
paul, i didn't advance the port timing, but i did close it a little bit later-mostly to direct the flow as opposed to increasing port volume.

and here's where i backfilled.
i accidentally erased the pic of the final port all cleaned up n sexy lookin', so i'll have to go retake it. the second pic is a better representation of the flow path of the port exit.

Damn that's hot!! I just called Mazda and they told me the only difference between the colors are the longevity that they are intended for. Orange is long lasting but they said to stick with green because that's what the car should use. They directed me to a local dealership that knew what they were talking about and he said to get prestone or another brand of equal quality. I work at 4 so I'ma stop by Napa and pick things up.

Just put a fresh disk in it like guitarjunkie says. Don't go overboard with what you read. Replacing a disk alone when there isn't a lot of miles on the cover is ok. It's just when the thing is warped, yours isn't old enough unless you beat the **** out of it.
The stock disk is fine for now. In fact if you read what Charles says his aftermarket hp clutch came with a stock looking disk.
G-junkie, ports look good from here, gotta help a bunch. Nice job.
Really like that you knew enough to fill and not just grind. A mistake alot of people make, by not thinking it through.

I wasn't holding out a lot of hope for this porting thing on a stock engine. That was until I saw this port. The exhaust didn't seem to hold much promise until FI comes along. BUT this primary port mod has me excited for an improvment right now. The fact that it needed filling tells me somthing was compromised in producing these parts. Maybe to save an operation or a core when cast.
Very good find 'junkie.

one more note:
i believe in being extremely accurate with port matching. i've pulled ported engines apart and have been horrified by the lack of matching abilities from the previous porter. i'm not saying i'm the best by any stretch of the imagination, but i do take the time to do my very best-whether it be photographed or not.
the radius is still mostly done by eye, but this ensures i have identical port opening and closing times. any other differences are basically negligable.
this port is about half-shaped. sorry about the lighting, but you get the idea.

Just talked to the guy from rx8garage and he's really cool. Said that he does not physically have the mazdaspeed but will soon. But for us wanting to put it back together soon I'm not going to wait for it. OEM is the way to go and he'll get it for me. hopefully have it by friday is that cool?
Also he said replacing the release bearings shouldn't be necessary because they last about twice as long as the clutch disk. Do mine appear really worn or can I just get the clutch disk? Thanks. I'ma email him with my info once you lemme know.

This kind of goes along with the discussion. When the port job is finished, say Snoochie wants to go and buy a new exhaust manifold(header). Would RG's idea from a while back flow the best? I don't quite remember, but it was something about separating the center siamesed port into 2 separate runners. At least I think it was. Or is there a better design that would work best with the increased flow after porting? Thanks.

the release bearing should be fine... i just hate when they get noisy- it's annoying.
rg's idea for the exhaust would be the best. however, it requires making a new exhaust sleeve for the intermediate housing. i dont' know the exact material it's made out of and we're pressed for time, so i think that'll have to be a project for another time.

About the header, I believe Racing Beat is working on, or already finished a design with the same concpet RG was talking about. I was just wondering how effective, or more effective it would be after porting engine. Thanks for the quick reply :D

You're ok. I just had a thought that the dimple may have been put there to make the air flow better after the rotor passed. Now that I see it I'm pretty sure that is not the case. You can see that it would be better not to aim at the side of the rotor but in the direction of its rotation. That is what you have done.

Just bought two gallons of Peak Coolant. Univerasal stuff, he said it's the best you can get. Also he didn't have a search book for 04 cars so can you check the number on the spark plugs for me? He said he could look it up with that.
