Stock greddy piping is 2" or less near the turbo. This is pretty small. Pressure drop is theoretically 0.5 psi/10' at that size (theory, assumes smooth piping with no bends and is likely the best-case scenerio. Going to 2.5 would decrease the pressure drop by around 3-fold.

Unfortunately I can't increase pipe dia. anyway as there is not enough room around the steering column .

After only one track day since installing the larger intercooler I can report a major drawback to fitting one this big - Overheating .
Blocking off airflow to the radiator has had a significant effect on coolant temps . So much so that I had to limit revs severly to prevent overheating . this did not happen at a previous track day under similar conditions with the stock Greddy intercooler.
Even my cruise temps are higher . Previously It would stay close to the thermostat opening temp 84 C wheras now temps reach over 90C at cruise .

It is up as high as I could get it while keeping the air filter where it is . There is no much room underneath for air to pass unobstructed .
Good to hear you have solved your issues .
Going to try a couple of things :
*Larger diameter lines to my 2nd radiator - trying to divert more flow to it rather than the main rad .
*Turn fans on earlier - mabe around 90C
*Perhaps look at ducting the airflow a little better to the main rad so air can't escape out the sides .

After doing this I would recomend anyone wanting to upgrade their Greddy intercooler go with one only slightly deeper but 4" thick . Blocking off the airflow to the main radiator does severely affect engine cooling .
So 24x10x4 or thereabouts .

/\ yep core size . Any thing that gives you roughly that cross sectional area but does not block the lower 2-3" of opening .
Of course if you take other measures to improve engine cooling the 24x12x3 size I have is ideal as you will get better IAT cooling with a larger frontal surface area

For the record - I have gone back to the stock Greddy intercooler for these reasons :
*Engine cooling issues . I was constantly overheating at the track and was running 3-4 deg c hotter on the street .
*Throttle response - I did some testing (logging g/s over time) to see if I could see any difference in lag and found none at all worth mentioning . However what I could not measure acurately was the initial throttle response time . Seat of the pants says it is a lot better with the smaller intercooler .
*As i'm no longer chasing higher whp numbers I did not feel that the increase in flow and better IATs with the larger IC was of more benefit than the points above .

The above points are to be taken seriously - considering the RX8 already has a heat problem covering it with a larger than needed intercooler is not the best idea. Another good point is the larger intake volume the longer it takes to fill.
If I was going for better temps, i'd find the smallest sensible intercooler I could and run methanol/water injection.

Seeing as I had done the tests I thought I may as well post the results here .
These charts represent the rise in mass air flow from a cruise situation to WOT in 3rd gear from 3 different rpm base starting points .
The test was done to see what lag was induced by the use of the larger intercooler .
It does show some interesting results ..............

sorry to bring up an old thread but i was just wondering if this intercooler would a wise choice to get, http://www.bshspeedshop.com/store/tr...tercooler.html the size is debatable but seeing that it flows 600 cfm it should be on par with the greddy intercooler at the very least right? as long as its more efficient at dissipating heat while being smaller would make it a good choice right?

O, my car has the bnr turbo, walbro fuel pump, 750cc 2ndary injectors, bhr ignition and other non fuel and air stuff, I also have an aem tru boost gauge and Cobb ap but yeah that's my problem as of right now, might be a boost leak, but I wanted more power so Bryan told me to get a bigger intercooler... So that's where I'm at.

Well - your IC wont be doing that .
If I knew what power vs psi you were making at various rpm I could probably tell if it was a boost leak or not .
Other clues would be running very rich with a very high mass air flow reading .
Are you still running the stock wastegate actuator ?
