What part of the car is it coming from will help. I have a rattling noise when in boost because my gauge sucks and the pin makes a noise, it could be a lot of things.

If it is like a crackling hiss that is not good. Might be detonation. If sounds differently it may be that one of your pipes is loose. The connections on this kit are not particularly good, so take it to a qualified mechanic, get it on a lift and see if you have some loose piping banging up against something.

What's wrong with a crackling hiss? Apparently, it's normal according to Mazda.

I've never heard it described that way before. Hiss? hmmmm ... Detonation sounds like marbles falling on a tile floor to me. I don't know what about detonation sounds like a hiss!

Pebbles rattling in a tin can is the classic description of detonation in a rotary.

And again, is there anything wrong with that?

The sound is coming from under the hood...more like under the car - maybe its cause where the turbo is placed.

the noise is more like rattling - screeching, metal bouncin on metal noise

"Pebbles rattling in a tin can " ...that would describe it very well.

also im running on 94 octane all the time(freakin gas is makin me broke)

my understanding is that if its detonation, most likely it is, that it can blow the engine?

any ways to prevent this?

If you are running into detonation at 5 psi, there is definitely something wrong. Since you are running 94 octane (and not being an idiot and running lower octane on a FI'ed, high compression application), that is not it. Are you running the EManage ? I was one of the first ones to get this kit, and got the first batch that had a defective load on my EManage, as such it was basically running the stock A/F maps on a boosted application. On the dyno it almost blew my engine up. Again, Thanks Greddy...you SOB's. Might have a defective EManage. Call Greddy.

BTW, detonation is about the worst thing you can do to your engine. That is what kills engines in short order.

Get it tuned.
Read Mazdamaniacs 3 Greddy turbo fixes thread. Also, the InterceptorX is the easy way around this but you may not want to pay that much.

Yes, a rotary does have unique sounds compared to piston engines. Although, "Pebbles rattling in a tin can " is a problem.

I didn't take your first post seriously. How could you possibly think that detonation is acceptable/normal?

Because I've had the marbles in a tin can sound at 7k rpms for a while now and my dealership says it's normal.

Isn't your car Normally Aspirated? I'm really suprised it would make that sound.
If you want to bring it to our next meet, i'll take a look at it and let you know if its the sound of detonation. That sound is all too familiar to me.

Sounds good, but what I'm trying to figure out is...if it is indeed detonation, what can I do about it? See another dealership?

Raptor, if there is detonation there can be several reasons for it, some fixes are quicker and cheaper than others.... which are going to be the ones you want to start out with.

We'll discuss more after we find out if its detonation or not. if its not... it would just be a waste of time.

I wasn't planning on going to the bjs meet on thursday, but if you coming i'll swing by. If not, you can catch me at TMS on Sunday.
