Highest total mileage with 275- 300rwhp?
As the title says, I am interested in hearing from others concerning how many miles on a single engine that has been obtained with the Renasis engine and approx 300rwhp?
Please include:
driving style (track or not)
what part of the country do you live in (hot / cold)
Mods (w/m injection, cooling, type f/i and what boost/flow numbers etc)
How do you handle premix (sohn or not etc)
who tuned your car?
I am just trying to get a feel for the realibility of this engine at this power level?

Hell I'm not yet at a dynoed 300hp so I can't speak to your question.........I hear tell that there are several turbos the are at 300hp or above and some of the Pettit members are there also. Some should answer you. I just hope this does not get as confusing as the high/low compression thread.

Well, my car has 145,000 miles on the chassis. 120,000 of them are FI. Over 5000 of those miles are on track.
8 motors - two lost an apex seal (the first to tuning/heat/stupidity/e-Manage and the second to a severed wastegate line), two lost coolant seals (both on track), one had a foreign object go through it and two spun a bearing and hooped the e-shaft (both on track). 8th motor is in the car presently.
That is an average of 15k miles per motor, but the actual breakdown is 30k miles for the first motor, 15k for the second, 50k miles for the 3rd, 9k for the 4th, 12k for the 5th and 4k for the last. Give or take.
From the 3rd motor on, there were quite a few excursions well beyond your horsepower limitation in the original question.
When you look at the development cycles for this (three ignition system designs and related tuning, three engine management systems and tuning, 5 different turbo systems and a myriad of cooling modifications), all of which I was pioneering, it is actually not a significant price. All of those motors from the 3rd on were built entirely from used parts.

I'm speaking for another, but this is just based on what I read in posts, but Jason (mysql) was at 307whp and he said he was getting averaging about a 1-3mpg drop during DD habits.
You could check his build to see what he had for mods/tune. Driving style, I'm not sure...

Fuel economy is maybe 1 mpg down from stock. Unless you're in boost, it's going to be stock.... 307 whp would be conservative since boost wasn't all that high (9 psi) and bc wasn't setup at the time. I'm guessing it was more like 350 whp. Turbo was uninstalled when the greddy manifold started to crack and leak.
Please include:
driving style (track or not) No track
what part of the country do you live in (hot / cold) FL
Mods (w/m injection, cooling, type f/i and what boost/flow numbers etc) 9-12 psi 3071R turbo
How do you handle premix (sohn or not etc) Sohn + Idemitsu premix
who tuned your car? MazdaManiac
I'd have no hesitation recommending MazdaManiac + AccessPort for FI. Chris did it per my recommendation and he's gone a few years without issue too.

i know an old forum member who was in the ~280 range on the greddy turbo, no premix, sohn iirc, and int-x. made about 30K miles running strong before the car was totalled by a drunk driver

good info guys keep them coming. Thanks MM for the breakdown---research engines really dont count as far as realiability monitoring But without reasearch engines the RX8 wouldnt be as far along as it is.
I have the Pettit lit--street tuned by Pettit . Running snow w/m system on track and part time on street.
My first engine was around 280hp with 8psi-- lasted approx 10K, I didnt know what detonation in the rotary sounded like--lol--stupid. Stock injectors
2nd engine lasted approx a little over 300hp lasted 15K--blew on track when a gas line started leaking and the rear rotor leaned out.10lb boost running stock injectors and 2 550cc's in p2 spot
3nd-- lasted 10K--- blew for no reason that I can find. Maybe some misfire/pre-ignition that I did not hear? Maybe bad gas? I had just filled up at a station that I normally didnt use.IDK
4th engine going in now-- just a junk yard find, while I build another one.
my car has always been a DD car 78K on chassis, approx 3-4 K track miles?

I'm pretty happy with my current setup which has 16000 miles on it .
driving style (track or not) No track on this engine so far . Both previous engines died at the track and that has made me weary of using it for track duty at elevated boost although neither failure was due to overheating
what part of the country do you live in (hot / cold) Mild climate
Mods (w/m injection, cooling, type f/i and what boost/flow numbers etc) Turbo -sitting between 300-310whp and 260lb/ft torque . Run an extra radiator where 2nd oil cooler would go - no 2nd oil cooler
How do you handle premix (sohn or not etc) premix at 200:1 and reduce OMP flow by 1/2
who tuned your car? me
My feeling is that this setup will last a long time so long as i dont track the car . If i go back to track I'll reduce power to around 270 and 230ft/lb torque and see how that goes .

funny--i have never had an engine to die on track except the one in which the gas line had a leak. I dont count that one.
My troubles are on the street. Maybe my lower redline and keeping close eyes on the temps?
Anyway---if anyone has 50K on an FI renasis engine--then I would say that is REALLY GOOD.

I only put a few thousand on mine.
When my tune seemed to be right I drove it HARD. Lots of long pulls in high boost 12+psi (I saw in excess of 16psi a couple times). As for power levels.... My dyno sheets exceeded 300rwhp at under 11psi on WG alone. The last few months I was daily driving it at 14psi with my WG and BC bringing the boost up very early. I can pretty confidently say my car had quite a few miles on it in excess of 350rwhp. My rx8 made more power up top than my stock Z06 did(they dyno 360-370rw stock).
This was all done here in florida, lots of it in the hot summer. No water/meth, no premix, I simply added to the OMP tables.
When i demodded and put the car back to stock, the car still ran like new on the stock tune. Amazing after all my mad scientist experiments with the tune.

it wont, but consider the question...
The most popular/common options around here all are pushing their limits pretty quickly at this range of power. (for any of the usual vultures) - yes we know the pettit, and greddy based stuff has made more than 300. but generally 300ish is where things begin to get hairy. efficiencies go out the window, temp control struggles climb, etc etc
The less common/popular options are, well, less common for one. and many of them do not frequent the forum if any at all. Some portion of the less common option/approaches are also the few who are not immediately concerned with longevity but rather experimenting and/or pushing limits.
So what else can you expect? The most common approaches, and the ones who are more immediately geared towards longevity are also the ones who who are constantly struggling with pushing the realistic limits of their systems, mechanical issues, temperature control, fuel control, etc.

What oil did you run? I was planning on adding to the OMP tables as well, but in addition I plan to run a couple ounces of premix. I got the Idematzu Rotary Fuel Lube. I am going to run Castrol 20W50 in mine. Did you do any extra cooling mods? I live in Texas so this is important to me.

What was your setup that had you putting 350 to the wheels? I have a Precision Turbo t67 getting installed as I type this, but with stock ignition and fuel pump, I'll be stuck around 320 I think.
