Not AGAIN!!!! Michelle reminded me last night what happened on the return flight last time; I vomited on the plane (in the bag!) for the first time in my life.

Now, the reality of seeing this, very unlikely why? The oil companies would be put out of business and an engine that hardly ever wore down, likely lasting well past 10-15 years if not more with no need to service? That would put a lot of people out of business, I'd see them getting bought out before they'd let that happen.

I'm definitely following this one Kane... congrats on a beastly motor coming out of this. I'm really interested to see how the upgraded seals work. I have a beastly motor build going on also, but I'm not 100% sold on which seals I'm going with. I've been thinking about using the Esmeril seals but I'm curious what made you settle on the ceramics?

Because they are proven. When Ceramic motors get pulled apart they show almost zero wear on the housings. World records are built on 'em.
And Ray can attest to the clearances on the NRS ones; they are fantastic. Also if you have some time - call Sven at NRS and he can get you RX8 ones - so you don't have to mill the rotors like I did.

Why ceramics?
Ceramic seals offer a number of benefits. They are kind to the hard chromed surface of the rotor housing and reduce friction as well. They virtually eliminate seal groove wear. They are several times stronger than any steel seal and handle detonation better. They weigh approx 5.5 grams each as compared to 14 grams for steel. That's almost a 2 ounce weight savings on two rotors!! Increased torque, increased reliability and just try to wear these out! Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last 10-15 years. I read that blurb along with a few others, but the comment in that paragraph that made me curious was the "(except for detonation)" portion. I've read some articles Racing Beat includes with their catalogs where they specifically don't recommend ceramic seals in boosted applications.
I've just read/heard some mixed things about ceramics in boosted applications that made me unsure about their suitability for a street driven boosted 8. I'm more concerned with seals ability to handle possible detonation than some of the other advertised features ceramic seals are really good for.
One of the reasons I've been interested in the Esmeril seals is the advertised ability to deform if detonation occurs rather than shattering and flinging shards through the motor. Obviously the Esmeril seals haven't been out for long, and don't have the proven history ceramics have, but I'm just trying to sound out the best seal for a street driven motor.
Anyway, best of luck with the motor, can't wait to see the final results.

I have esmeril seals in my engine. Chris built the engine for me. I have esmeril turbo with snowperformance water meth. During tuning we forgot to check the rev limiter...it was set at 8000 rpm. There is no fuel after 8000 rpm. We were in full boost and all of the sudden I head 3 bang bang bang like gun shots from the engine bay and I though here we go the engine. But to my surprise the engine still pull 20 in/HG vacuum afterward. It runs smooth like nothing had happened. The engine pulls 20 in/HG the first time it starts and it still pulls 20 in/HG now after that incident during tuning. All I can say is it is much stronger than the stock seal. We'll see how long it will last. I am sure it will last a long time as long as the car is kept in good tune and has adequate lubricant from either premix or from OMP.

some people also run the aviation apex seals---guaranteed not to break--they will bend slightly though--can you imagine being in the air or landing/takeoff and a seal goes?
I did ask Rick E about ceramics once and he said "Why". He thought it was overkill for a street car. He didnt have anything agaisnt them--jusy for street running he didnt think it was an absoulute need.
Never the less--if I had the funds I also would do this!Along with some otherthings.
