edit: back on topic...I don't have a turbo RX-8 (yet) but my previous turbocharged cars were all run cat-less (no emissions testing in Hawaii). Never had a problem with the smell.

Tailgaters beware
Cats are for girls(that don't drive Rotaries) and emissions control experts( no emissions in FL! ). Run it with no cats if you are running a turbo. Cats are a turbo's enemy, free flowing intake and exhaust is what they love. I have the AP Titanium tipped 3" with no cats, right now with no turbo, but I bought the exhaust in anticipation of my turbo. At this time my car is insanely obnoxious sounding and I drive with my windows closed most the time, but from what I understand the turbo should quiet it down a little and if it does at all, I will be happy. I wouldn't have it any other way, gotta let your Turbo breath!

Most of us in the real world have to deal with local laws or we can't drive on the street (at least, not for very long).
That said, there are ways to get around the PCM's OCD with regards to emissions and the CAT.
It just seems that some of the more notable performance experts have not turned their attention to this detail.
Maybe they live in Florida...

the borla + catless midpipe was so loud I had to remove one or the other because it was too loud NA. With the turbo on, it was quiet again.
That's not to say that you can't get it loud with a turbo - cause the hks hi-power and catless is quite loud. I can't imagine that combo on a NA car.

I guess we will all have to move to Florida, then.

Can't you just keep the stock cat in your garage and put it back in when you have to do your emissions check? That's what we used to do when we had emissions.
I'm glad someone mentioned that their car was really loud then they put a turbo on and it sounded better, I was worried and I miss the fresh air and my sunroof.
