We have "improved" the design, to make it more packageable. Thats right, we haven't been sitting idle.
The pics above show it mounted how we will run it on the engine dyno, and perhaps in the 808 wagon, but...
When we go to install it in the RX-8, there is an issue or two. From my earlier pictures, you can probably tell there isn't much room behind the blower to bring the intake round between the blower and the firewall. Plus it is a long duct required. So are going to do something "special" if not unique. The blower will sit in the same overall position as the earlier engine bay photos (i.e under then engine cover etc), but it will be facing "back to front". The beauty of this is the throttle body will be now at the front of the blower, and there will be a nice staight path from the CAI and MAF tube to the TB and into the blower!
The "complication" it introduces is that the blower drive is at the rear, not at the front. This means it is necessary to either run the blower off the flywheel (

This not really a new idea, I have seen it used sucessfully on the Chev LS1 PD blowers:

This introduced one other slight design challange, not really an issue with the "roots" style blowers on the LS1. The drive is in the wrong direction!!! So what we are going to do is have a "double sided" long belt at the front, and wrap it round the backside of one of the pulleys

This is the exact reason why I think Richard should run his throttlebody on the front of the blower rather than the back. I've looked long and hard and can't figure out how to get the inlet around from the back. This makes alot of sense.

Hymee I know what you mean as to what your problems with reversing it are. You don't have much choice but to do a sort of dual belt adaptation as you can't exactly cut a new set of reverse twisted rotors.

A formed carbon fiber duct. Shaped to keep the airspeed the same even though it changes shape.

Smart ***! It's going to take a complex mold which of course you know I haven't built yet. Take a balloon, stick it between the ABS and the SC blow it up. Then you can start from there. :D :D
The prototype will be fab'ed from ali. I have the CF material though, want a picture of that? Kinda neat, you can buy it as a sleeve and it acts like a those basket weave finger sleeves. So you can make it optimum size within a range that is. Then you shape it inside a mold, lay up some layed CF, put a blow up bag inside so it hugs the mold and cure in autoclave. In our case an oven.
Sounds ez anyway. We know it will be a time consuming part but it's that or welded ali which can never be good looking if it's a complex shape. I better not bad mouth fab'ed ali before I know if I can really make the CF part. What if it winds up having to be ali?

Answer: it gets cast. We don't like the weight of such a part though. It will all be a cost and effect in the end.

I actually did some basic design for a "planetary reversing pulley" :D Pulley spins one way, shaft spins the other. I also drew one up that looked a lot like the center of a diff. That would have worked as well.
I decided on less reliance on a new invention, more use of proven components. An the need for lube in the geared solutions wasn't that enticing.

i think if you look back about umpteen pages in the afs thread you will find where i was asking about the orientation of richards and was quite puzzled by his choice. but his unit is smaller

- The purpose of the design is for room. There isn't much room back there. The is a fair bit of room in the area in front of the main enging pulleys.
- One of the great things about timing belts, is that they don't rely on, or need much tension.
And we probably would ship the unit "pre-assembled" anyway. Well, I would like to think so.
