Would some extruded honing help with flow?? or would it be considered anal..? Cheers, Hymee. |

Cheers, Hymee. Yeah... of course... I knew that.. ;) ;) ;) ahem.... Just testing ya to make sure you're the full quid :D :D :D |
Quick report...
The owner of the chassis dyno said "Too much torque!" in a light hearted sort of way. So, I guess we could say in the history books: Hymee said "Let there be Torque", and rotary owners rejoiced. Seriously, this is something we need to carefully manage with expert tuning, but is a nice "problem" to have in some ways! We have spent 6 hours on the chassis dyno in the last two days, experimenting with boost (pulley combos), intercooling options, and injectors. The results are very promising, and we have a very streetable car that launches like a rocket and goes like the clappers, even with 3 or 4 people on-board. And two of us are reasonably big units! Currently running max of almost 11 PSI, and it stays between 8 and 10.8 from low RPM to the top end. We see about 50 HP at the wheels at the BOTTOM END, and this stays at about 40 - 50 right the way through. We haven't fully explored the top end. It takes a lot of work tuning to get where we have, and getting things going properly at all load/rpm points along the way. We have started exploring the upper reaches, and can see some things that can be improved upon, however time is never on your side. In the fullness of time, more things will be learned, and it can only get better. The limit on time at the moment was getting things right for a long highway drive to the nats, and have something ready to be driven on the track. That goal has been accomplished, with promising results as I said. I have a bunch of pictures to post, and I will when I get some more time. Right now it is time to get packed for the nationals. I'm sure there will be lots of pictures taken by others, and opinions posted :D Intercooling is working VERY well, taking 40 - 50 degrees C (and more) from the blower discharge, and keeping it a very constant / capped level under long periods of boost, maintaining about 10C over ambient. So that w-a intercooler is doing a good job. Exhaust is awesome, and I have some vid of a red-hot collector and cat :) That said, the center console temp has virtually been eliminated! Thanks Grandad! (Phil Laird, Graphic Skills Racing) Cheers, Happy Hymee. |
Wow... 50hp and however much extra torque down low... I'll take one if the price is decent =)
|
!!!!!!! :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D !!!!!!!!!!!
|
Wow, great job Hymee!
|
I guess I have to sign up here soon...
|
Im assuming your bringing it to the Nats hymee?
If so it should be a great viewing. Cya there |
well, Interceptor + greddy got 290+ WHP at 5.5PSI near 8K.
with a proper tune..... 8K + 10PSI... over 300 HP at the wheels.. by a bit. SWEET. |

That 290whp was at a whopping 12.5psi.

Holy torque monster Batman!
Now THIS is what we've been waiting for. Setup us up with a bolt-on package that is competitive with the Greddy Kit (under $5k USD) and you'll have a winner on your hands. Looking forward to more. :D :D :D |

Well I wasn't refering to it in the current form. The thread is long, but Hymee DID talk about using different ECU solutions and developing an ECU "flasher" for the stock ECU. The Motec is what *he* is using *now* for full control while developing this. A motec is simply too expensive for the average person who would like a "bolt-on" FI kit. So the hell with them? Go for the people who are will to spend $8-10k on a S/C kit plus install? There's no money in it. If he wanted to just do a "one-off" custom job for 1 or 2 customers that would work. But if he intends (which it looks like to me) to somewhat mass-market a kit, then other options will be needed. The motec is great... for those with big to unlimited budgets wanting huge horsepower and the ability to tune it on their own. What about everyone else who just wants a little more power and isn't interested in tuning it themselves? Obviously Pettit knows this... the word is that they intend their kit to be bolt-on. Unless I missed something, Hymee is thinking to offer a bolt-on version as well as a "tuner" version. Hymee??

Hymee won't be replying to anything for a few days as he's going to the first ever Australian RX8 nationals :D mainly to show off his toys ;) ;) ;) |

using a motec is a good idea, it allows the tuner to fine tune at every possible rpm range and get the most out of it, therefore a more affordable stand alone ECU can be used to produce the "improved" version. leave the motec for the "hardcore" version. but then agian, how long do you think you will stay with the "improved" setting? lets wait till hymess comes back and see what he says :D |

it was at 12.5psi until about 6k or so, then dropped right to 5.5psi. the turbo couldnt flow enough. if we could maintain 10 lbs all the way through, imagine what the power would be |
I'm excited and I don't even own an rx8! Freaking collector looks like the exhaust nozzles from the space shuttle! :)

... is my thought as well. Personally... I'm not looking for a 500whp car. Something that handles well, fits like a glove, has a bit of luxury and has a bit of grunt is all I'm looking for. In modding... my car is my daily driver and so I want reliability and easy maintenance... like OEM. If I MUST have an AFR gauage and make regular adjustments... I don't need that FI kit. For something that you just track or drive on weekends that's fine, but not for my daily driver. |
I would like something that can run a in a good, self contained, conservative street mode, and be jumpered or switched to be an agressive, needs attention track mode.
Any BTW.. Watched the video a few more times.. the boost is at 6 or below when the HP peaks at ~ 290hp. 10 psi would be over 300 hp. |
Hymee where's the dyno sheet, would like to see some time sheets also if possible.Interested to see how your kit matches the other 10 or so, on PRICE v PERFORMANCE.

Hymee is just travelling back from the Nats -- he's driven >2,000ks in under 5 days, had a hard track day, supported his first customer who was on the track, too --- plus all the duties of sponsor....and he ...er...enjoyed the evening afterwards ;)
I'm sure he'll be more than keen to answer your questions, but in a few days. Think Hymee, think shagged just now |
