Hopefully someone has a vid of the awesome whine of the twin screw wailing past about 1m from the barrier at 150kmh or so. It certainly was distinctive.
(Of course all of our 8's sounded pretty cool as well)

I recall someone saying (sco, maybe?) he had a few video/audio clips of Wildcard's Hymee Supercharged car belting down the straight. Stay tuned, I reckon.

So Hymee's kit is in WILDCARD'S car?Correct me if i'm wrong please. How well did it go in the race?Any drama's reguarding TEMP,OVERHEATING?What does it sound like?Any footage? How does the blower affect the handling of the vehicle due to the extra weight of the blower, piping, etc, etc.?How much does the kit weigh, including all piping, manifold, pulleys, etc, etc? How efficient is this type of blower, and does the general function of the blower absorb any horsepower? Is there a running in period?I know I've asked many questions, dont worry i've plenty of patience, not expecting all answers today?thankyou verry much

I was lucky enough to be one of the first forumites to sit in Wildcards car. I have only one word to describe the car...AWESOME!!

The car pulls hard in all gears and pushes you back into your seat. The power delivery starts at low revs...this means you do not have to rev the guts out to get perfomance. The power is addictive and just right for the car.

The all new exhaust sounds great at low revs you know there is something different and I was surprised to discover that at high revs it sounded unobtrusive and civilised.

What impressed me the most was the track reliability. It ran all day without any major hiccups or over heating problems.

Well done Hymee!!

Hopefully I've not overlooked it, but has anyone posted up the vids yet? I'm seriously interested in purchasing one of these whenever they become available, and would absolutely love to get a preview, or at least a look at how things stand at the moment. Doesn't have to be anything fancy.

wont a stock baseline mean only a supercharger and no other mods?

And also (something that concerns me directly) will base setups be internationally applicable (IE An OZ setup working in the UK?)

I like the Motec idea, gives you the option of runing with a MAP sensor and tossing the AFM. As long as it's a direct plug in to the wiring harness or an adapter, it'll work with all the accesories (ie. a/c) and comes with the (wideband and other options enabled etc) I'm game. Having the Motec will allow you to retune for any and all Mods you make to your car from the second you drop it in till the day it gets tossed as scrap metal.

Hi all,

Sorry for the long hiatus in my posts. I had severely limited internet access while on the road to the Nats and back. I must admit that after getting home from the nats I have been pretty exhausted. Add to that my wife has been struck down with the 'flu, you can see my time has been pretty precious, especially trying to catch up on my day job!

Anyway, how did we go?

Well here is a "nearly finished" picture of the engine bay with the blower installed, and all the intake plumbing in place. I'll get Dan or Sco or anyone else at the nats to post a more final picture, as I can't for the life of me find my own piccy.

The tig-welded aluminum assembly sitting atop the intake runners contains the intercooler core. Cool water passes through this and in turn cools the air from the blower. Testing to date has shown the intercooling system we have chosen to be performing very well. Maximum temps are quite low (and stable), and the recovery rate is very good.

The main things different from this to what we presented at the nationals was the intake tubing from the cold air box to the throttle body has been painted black, and the intercooler in-line filler has been tidied up wrt to the plumbing.

Here is a picture showing the front mounted cooler component of the intercooling system. This large radiator has a thermo fan on the back and the airflow cools the warm water from the intercooler core.

The "news" is that we planned to have 2 cars at the Aus. nationals with this combo, mine and Wildcards. Time was scarce, and I forfeited my own ego to let the Wildcard machine get to the point it did. Here are some pics of Wildcards beast on the dyno:

We are still playing around with pulley sizes, and belt lengths to suit. As such, we have not yet installed a suitable tensioner, and this has caused a couple of belt failures to date. From memory, I fitted 2 new belts during the course of the track time at Wakefield Park. That said, the car drove from Brisbane to Wakefield (1000 odd km) without issue.

Looks GREAT! A few questions:
1) What were the dyno numbers?, Can you post a graph?
2) Are you going to include the "supercharged" badge showed above with each kit?....(COOL!)

One thing I can say about the belt issue - is that it still drives well with no blower belt at all. Slightly less power at full throttle than stock, but unless you had a boost gauge and heavy on the trottle, you wouldn't even know.

After the first 3 hour session on the dyno, it became apparent that a major injector change was required due to running out of fuel at about 7000 RPM. This required an extra day on the "rollers" to re-tune against the new injector combo. Thankfully with the Motec, and an experienced tuner, this was not a problem - other than the time and effort required.

After spending two long sessions on the dyno, and limited road/highway tuning, the car was driven to Wakfield the next day. Like I mentioned, this was without incident, and certainly was not being "babied" for the trip. "Hang on Wildcard, the others have dropped behind!"

The interest in the "kit" was pretty amazing the first night at the Nats. I'd be keen to see some others pictures. :D And we were reminded of the noise curfew, and to stop revving it!

While the other FI cars on show either didn't turn a wheel on the track, or made short outings (albeit on very fast one!), Wildcard kept putting in the laps. He was a happy fella. Here are some shots of his adventures:

I did about 5 or 6 laps in the beast, and it was really awesome to drive. Lazy power on tap, much more like a V8 to drive (but with nearly 2x the RPM's ) The extra grunt out of the corners and up the hill was amazing. I just should have thought a bit more ahead, and been game enough for one of the quick experienced fellas to get stuck into it. Although Wildcard's times are pretty impressive considering it was his first time on the track. Also give him some slack and take into acount all the times he had to back off before passing a few of the other "group 1" cars

We are yet to have our final dyno results, but what I am prepared to say is that from as little as 2500 RPM, it makes 40 more HP at the tyres over stock. That is about double the HP at the bottom end, something that only be achieved with the type of blower we are using, or going to a larger capacity motor, i.e a "stroker". Anyone want to be stroked and blown?

This power gain stays pretty constant at between 40 and 50+ HP over the low to mid range, which means this rotary engined street car makes some real grunt. Useful grunt.

So what about reliabilty on the track. Yes - I have made no secrets of the belt issue, and we are confident of fixing that. I guess what amazed most people, judging by there comments to me, was that we just kept lapping and lapping. About 30 timed flying laps in all, plus the out and in laps. No overheating, no fires, no pulling off to the side, no coming in after 2 or three laps. Just big grins from Wildcard.

We have got some prices together for the kit, and we will be adding a new section to the "PDA" website in the very near future. I wont post the price here as I don't think I am supposed to :o

We even have some pretty commited customers wanting to get this on their cars as soon as possible.

I have a link here to a short video I tossed together. Mainly to experience the blower whine :D

Performance Design Australia's Twin-Screw Supercharged RX-8

(3.5 MB download - crank up the volume!)

I've got some more video footage I need to capture and host, even some on the dyno

After I get some sleep, I'll dig out some of the Motec logging to show the constant boost of this blower. With the pulley combo we are using at the moment, we are running at a nominal 10 PSI boost. And the really cool thing? We were driving along up a bit of a hill the other day with 4 adults in the car. Wildcard was being pretty gentle, but at 50% throttle, he found 10 pound

Even more amazing was when wer were crusing down to the nats...

Wildcard said over the CB "I'm making 2 PSI boost up this hill".

I replied "How much throttle you got on?... I'm flat to the floor in 6th, and it can't keep up..."

Wildcards reply: "I dunno Hymee, it's on cruise control" Without a word of a lie!

Thanks to Grandad (Phil Laird - Graphic Skills Racing), Wildcard, sco and all you forum guys for getting behind this project. We reckon it is a real winner.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I guess I asked for that. Not included in price, nor available as an option.

Now get back on topic and chub-up to the vid, brother!

Cheers,
Hymee.

I just wet myself again - if this keeps up you'll need to include new jeans with the kit.

Will the Mazdspeed Upper Strut Tower Brace fit with your kit?

I'm starting to like that blower whine more than a turbo spooling up and the bov going off. So nice to finally hear it on a Renesis! Keep up the great work Hymee!

Hey Hymee,

There's something wrong with Wildcard's car. It looks like it's in a mirror or something.

Yeah, and [doppler effect] instead of the pitch of the sound of his car getting lower as it went away from you down the straight, the pitch of his car went higher! woot!

since no one else is complaining:

you should have made the intercooler on top a rotar shape
