axial flow man!! axial flow!!!:D:

rotarygod 11-03-2005 04:16 PM

It uses a bypass valve. You don't need a clutch.

california style 11-04-2005 02:21 AM

My heart will need a bypass valve unless we get these babies finished!

The engine management and tuning is still whats worrying me tho, as I certainly wont be buying a supercharger until im confident it will work without having to use all types of computers being bolted on and fiddled with.

Also message to Hymee...good job so far, it looks great

Message to RP... sorry to hear about the setbacks, but keep yer head up, and rebuild that baby!

Jabberwock 11-04-2005 02:42 AM

I want!!! I want it now!!!!

Please...

That sound like a freakin' Jet. The whine is so loud. How much for just the loud sounds the SC makes? hehe...jk

lafrad 11-04-2005 07:06 AM

that thing fully sounds like a heavy duty chainsaw or maybe a high power snowmobile... You get the powerful, smooth, loud exhaust, with the chain/belt noise coming from under the engine bay.

Excellent work... gonna be hard for anyone to mistake THIS machine.. (but they better LOOK fast, as it won't stay in one spot for very long...)

Greddyturbo1 11-04-2005 07:56 PM

Hymee, just saw your latest Video, I love my Turbo , but I must say, Damn SC sounds Great good luck. If your numbers look as promising as your Video you just might get me to switch over .... Thanks, P.S I've watched it 5 times already

Have time frames for release ever been discussed in this thread?

IZoomZoomI 11-04-2005 11:18 PM

I don't think any vendor would ever want to release any kind of time frame based on the history of how some were treated when those deadlines were not met.

I thinking probably early spring for this one.

timbo 11-04-2005 11:44 PM

What do you mean by 'release'? Hymee already has his first customer and is currently looking for a local A/T car (4 port) to adapt the kit for that model. I have a real sense that if I was ready with the readies, I could have this fitted to my car very quickly

takahashi 11-04-2005 11:49 PM

:Freak_ani Wildcard ran it in the OZ Nats and we saw it roaring didn't we?

Hymee, why motec spell as "MoTeC"? :naughty:

It was a very neat set up, and I kept a straight face when I heard of the price tag :cwm27: :)

I thought the MOtec was :
A: Expensive
B: Needs tuning and tuning 'knowledge'

Correct me if Im wrong tho...

fray 11-05-2005 10:50 AM

forgive me for the possibly stupid question. But w/ the motec don't you loose the DSC control? Since the car ECU isn't able to control fuel delivery to help recover from a slide?

Losing standard DSC is what would keep me from considering an FI w/ motec controller.

should still be there :wiggle:

Racer X-8 11-05-2005 11:23 AM

Yeah, I just tried backtracking this for ya. Back on 9-9-05 (page 41 on my computer, and I'm on page 65 now), Hymee said the Motec would have total control of the engine management system. Out of context in regards to the DSC - perhaps... I didn't find a better answer to that one that I remember when he discussed this matter in some more detail. Oh well, it's back there somewhere... jeeze...

A. Yes it's expensive, but it's one of the best EMS's that $ can buy, and it will allow you to upgrade later to anything you could ever want to do with a retune.

B. If they write a map on the motec before they ship it to you and your car is built to their spec's then you probably won't need to retune.

But most won't need to utilize the full capability of the motec. A lesser system could relatively easily handle a pulley upgrade. Hopefully a more cost effective option will be given.

Hymee,

Maybe it is time for a recap of features of the kit.

good idea, maybe that is how Hymee can start Part 3 :)

Hymee, can you give us more info on the different options you will be offering, like ecu, boost, cooling, exhaust etc. And will the left hand drive be available at the same time as the right?

Please reply. Thanks.

sco 11-05-2005 07:56 PM

Guys,

We're working on an update to the website with a heap of info on the SC... hopefully out within a couple of weeks... so there will be a summary available soon.

When he said that he was talking about the "test mule"... which is not an RX-8.

On the RX-8 the drive by wire throttle is controlled by the stock PCM. Fueling and ignition timing is controlled by the MoTeC.

Hymee 11-05-2005 10:30 PM

Guys,

To answer some questions directly...

The Motec is in unison with the factory computer. DSC still works as it should, including traction control. Understanding how the factory PCM reduces power for traction control is the key to understanding why it still works in this setup. The hint is in sco's post above.

Wildcards first few days of driving his cars was frustrated by the fact it was wet. Even going up a hill in third gear was interupted by the TC kicking in.

ABS still functions normally.

I have hinted before that we still plan on offering different management system options. To start with, we used Motec cause it is the best, and we know it isn't going to give any problems. It is the best system, the most tuneable system, has the best logging...

Think about this... Lets say you have a "cheaper" solution that can only be tuned at 500 RPM increments. What happens when you have port valves opening at odd RPM such as 6250 RPM? How do you put in the numbers for that exact spot? What about when the engine idles at 700 or 800 RPM, and you are trying to put some fine grained control in there? The Motec allows you to have such fine grained control.

If you spend $35K on the car (or $60 big ones like in Aus), would you put up with bad starting, bad idling etc. for the sake of an extra $500 (or $1000) or so in mangement???

The custom exhaust system as pictured on Wildcards car will be available.

The intercooling solution currently offered is working very well. It consists of a 2-stage water-air intercooler, with one intercooler core mounted between the blower and the intake runners, and a front mounted core mounted, well, up front ;) Included is a hi-capacity electric "thermo" fan, as well as an electric water pump to circulate the coolant. This is working very well, and is taking about 50 degrees C out of the intake temps.

We are currently running at nominally 10PSI boost. And don't forget, unlike other styles of supercharger or turbocharging, that is 10PSI at 2500RPM, right through to 10PSI at 9200RPM :D.

As has been mentioned, we have already fitted to one customers car, and we have been scheduling in workshop time to fit others as well. At this rate, I'll be strugling for there to be workshop time to get the kit back on my car! LOL

I trust this answers the questions. I'm just working on encoding a few more vids from our journey so far. Something for the rotary historians ;)

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hymee 11-06-2005 12:25 AM

Here is short video of the first time the old girl was running with the supercharger, and the ill-fated toothed drive belt. You can't here much over the chatter!

http://www.hymee.com/rx8/videos/PDA_...rstRunning.wmv

This was taken on the evening of the 16th September 2005.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hymee 11-06-2005 12:29 AM

The very next morning, yours truly sourced some poly-rib pullies and a belt, then we soon had it running. As you can see (and hear), the results are far more acceptable!

http://www.hymee.com/rx8/videos/PDA_...1stRunning.wmv

Taken on the 17th September, 2005.

It was driven home that day from the workshop, then out to Willowbank for the Jamboree the next morning and put on display. Pics posted previously.

Things to note about the setup at that stage, remembering it was early on:
  • No intercooler
  • Bypass valve in operation
  • Boost apparent in the bulging blue silicone hose
  • Early stages of tuning

Cheers,
Hymee.
