I think my car is pinging.
I think I heard my car was pinging at over 6k rpms. I have the upgrade kit installed with no blocking plate, so I think the tune may be too lean for my setup. Does anyone here have a map for the EMU w/o a blocking plate? Also, I'm only boosting just under 6psi. I'm also running 91 octane. I don't want to get it tuned because thats a waste of money because I'm going to get a boost controller soon. Any advise? Thanks.

Get it tuned regardless, or if it pings and you don't know how/want to tune it, then stay the hell out of boost for the time being.
Get all the things together first then tune it.
Your other option is to ignore what I say, and keep boosting hoping that the ping goes away...

Pull 2 degrees of timing around that rpm point and see if you still hear it. If so pull 2 more. If its still there and your afr is 11.0-11.5, its probably not ping. If you don't have an AFR meter stop boosting until you buy one.

get it tuned now. the boost controller will help spool up times, among other things, but your tune will not be wasted getting it tuned before you have the boost controller installed. So there isn't any reason to wait.
e.g; my tune works on my car if my boost controller is turned off, set to 6 psi, or set to 12 psi..

Well, I talked to an expert (well not really, but he likes to think he is ) and he said that the cheap 91 octane i have is worse than, say shell 91 octane. So I'll fill up on that and have another go at it.
In the mean time, anyone have any recommendations for shops in Sacramento to get this thing tuned?

Why are you driving an untuned turbo setup on a rotary motor and without an A/F gauge?
So, I take it that the abuse you subjected yourself to during the install wasn't nearly enough and now you want to learn how to swap in a motor as well?

well, i haven't heard any pining since and I'm not 100 percent sure that it was to begin with. It was probably a false alarm, because there were a lot of other noises that came from outside. I was just a bit paranoid because one thing after another went wrong during my install and so I just didn't want to take any chances. I basically wanted to know if there is anything I could do to reduce the chance of knocking. Cold plugs and more expensive gas seem like the only quick fix type things I can do. I ordered a couple gauges today (AFR and Boost) and after that I will save up for a boost controller.
Thanks for the replies guys, and I really hope my motor stays in the car for a couple more years.

I said 'cracked' not 'blown'. The engine is perfectly capable of running with cracked seals. You might not ever know it, except perhaps for hard starts. It will run just fine on cracked seals until something else causes them to blow out. Then, you'll know it. (my voice of experience)

A seal can have a stress fracture in it somewhere but still seal just fine. It doesn't have to have lowered compression to still have a problem. A stress fracture could show up at anytime. It may be under boost or it may be just easy cruising down the street when the seal finally lets go. You never know.

MM & RotaryGod are two of the most knowledgeable people here, and they're both telling you you're an idiot if you don't get your car tuned. So, I'll add my small voice to their thunderous din:
"you're a total idiot if you don't get your car tuned"

Not a total idiot. A total idiot would deny that tuning has to be done at all.
Unreal accepts that it needs to be done, but his time line is, once again, being dictated by his impatience.
That just makes him impetuous, not stupid necessarily.
