the smog ****'s don't care about how clean an engine burns...they care about paperwork. period.
classic battle of the letter of the law vs. the word.
the engine (note ENGINE; not entire car)from my fd burns a lot cleaner than the stock engine ever did, but it's illegal because i have a haltech.

can you masquerade the engine to look like the renesis? like slap some fake accessories on top of it :-) just so you can pass the visual test. He he
I am sure whoever does the testing, don't know much about neither of the engines to be able to tell them apart once it has been prepped to look alike. (Not quite sure it is possible, but just a thought)

masquerqde my renesis to look like a renesis? that shouldn't be too hard
the main thing is the s4's had egr, renesis doesn't. insta-failure from the functionality test.

You're specifically worried about CA emissions rules? I don't think it would be an issue in NH. Some counties have a sniff test, but not mine. The main reason I want to switch to a Renesis is that I assumed it would be cleaner than my N/A six port 13B.
My understanding is that the Renesis will bolt up to my FC transmission, which would be good because it has a lower overdrive, ergo better mileage on the highway. Do you know if the six port intake is interchangible?

the intake won't bolt up. the induction system is all different.
and you'd probably wanna use a t2 tranny, unless you use an aftermarket flywheel and heavy-duty clutch.... actually, i'm not sure if many of the aftermarket clutches for the n/a rx7's will even hold the renesis power...not turbo anyway.
so renny motor, t2 tranny, renny intake stuff and you should be good to go.
for simplicity sake, i'll just get mine going with a cable throttle body so i can say i have a renny-fc, then i'll have plenty of time in the future to try to get the stock computer working and make it legally-legal.

How long a transmission or clutch lasts is completely at the discretion of the driver. I had a turbo II transmission on my old nonturbo RX-7 and I killed 2 different aftermarket clutches and the 5th gear syncro. I drove the hell out of it too.

When you do switch to the TII transmission, you need the rear end, driveshaft and half shafts too as well as the starter, a new flywheel, clutch, and clutch master and slave cylinder. There's a lot to it. You can delete half of those needs if you just get a new driveshaft made.

Dave, I wish I could have seen this project completed considering you were so knowledgable and you also happened to be close to where I live. May the heavens above give you the opportunity to complete this and many other Rotory projects.
